The clock rang at 6pm and my grandmother immediately got up to pray. Every day she prays in front of the butsudan in the “living room” of her home.
My grandparents converted to the Soka Gakkai sect of Buddhism years ago so that they could be buried together with my uncle (their only son) once they passed away. Since my uncle is a Soka Gakkai Buddhist, my grandparents had to convert in order to be buried in the Soka Gakkai cemetary (where my uncle will be buried once he dies). It was really important to my grandfather for his son to continue the family ohaka (grave), so my grandparents converted.
I never knew Buddhism had so many sects like other religions do. It made me think a lot about the role of religion and spirituality in our lives.

Buddhism: Do's and Don'ts
1. Don't ever keep your incense, statues, sutras, or other holy books on the floor. Doing so is disrespectful, and you may unwittingly generate negative karma. 2. Don't step over scriptures or holy things, either. When I find a Dharma book on the floor, I kiss it and give it a quick tap on my forehead. 3. Always elevate your Dharma books and materials above all other clutter, knick-knaks, and mundane items. 4. Don't sit or lie with feet pointed toward the altar or holy things. 5. Do make it a habit to make fresh, heart-filled offerings to the Buddhas at the shrine! Incense, perfumes, candles, fresh flowers, beautiful stones, and even snacks and bowls full of fresh water can be offered as well. 6. Don't write or mark on a Dharma book, or wet your fingertips to turn the pages. 7. Do try to meditate consistently every day, even if it's only five minutes! 8. If you must discard old Dharma books and papers with sutras on them, DON'T throw them away! Please burn them instead. 9. Do try to Take Refuge at least once every day, to reaffirm your commitment to love, compassion, peace, and the Triple Gem. Some followers Take Refuge 3 x daily. 10. Recite the short Vajrasattva mantra each night before bedtime, to prevent your negative karma from doubling, tripling, or worse! OM VAJRASATTVA HUM (27× repeated)
