His knuckles were still raw from the kill when he found Zemo waiting. Not General Zemoânot the uniformed man the Hydra techs saluted in the dark hallsâbut Zemo. The one who didnât flinch when Buckyâs boots left bloody prints across the tile. The one who watched him like he was something more than a weapon⊠and something less than human.
âYouâre not supposed to be here,â Bucky rasped. His voice was low, unfamiliar. The Soldier's voice.
Zemo didnât move from the chair. Just tilted his head, like one might to a wounded dog that hadnât yet decided whether to bite.
âI wanted to see what theyâve done to you.â
âThey fixed me.â
Zemoâs smile didnât reach his eyes. âIs that what you call it?â
Buckyâs jaw clenched. The mission still buzzed behind his eyes. The blood hadnât dried yet. His fists curled, ready. Always ready.
But Zemo stepped forward. Slow. Careful.
âYou remember me, donât you?â he asked softly. âNot from a file. From before.â
The Soldier blinked. Pain flared at the base of his skull like a cracked fault line. His breath hitched. âNo,â he said. Too fast.
Zemoâs hand came up. Rested gently on the metal arm. Cool against cold. âThey kept you on ice for years. I waited.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I knew youâd come back. Because I knew theyâd break you down, and when they didâŠâ Zemo leaned closer, voice low and burning. âYou wouldnât know where else to go but me.â
âYou think I belong to you?â Bucky asked, his voice strangled. âYou think just because they fucked with my head and broke my bones and scrubbed me clean, Iâm yours?â
Zemoâs gaze dropped to his mouth. âI know you are.â
Bucky grabbed himâfist in his shirt, slamming him into the wall. A painting fell. Glass shattered. Zemo didnât fight back. âYou made me into this,â Bucky whispered, trembling. âYou told them how to use me. You knew what theyâd do.â
âI gave them a tool. They forged the weapon.â
âYou knew what would happen.â
Zemo lifted a hand slowly and touched Buckyâs jaw. Gentle. Worshipful. âIâve given you everything. My loyalty. My patience. My plans. You donât even realise how many deaths I orchestrated just to keep them from wiping you clean completely. Every time they wanted to start over, I stopped it. Because youâre mine.â
âStop saying that,â Bucky hissed. His body shook. âYou donât know me.â
Zemoâs eyes softened, cruel and loving all at once. âDonât I, James?â
The Soldier stared at him like he didnât know whether to kill him or fall into him.
And then he kissed him. Fierce. Unforgiving. Teeth and fury and desperation, crashing together like the world would burn if they didnât.
When they broke apart, Bucky was gasping, broken open.

The snow had long since melted, but the chill in the bunker remained. Bucky sat on the edge of the cot, head bowed, hands hanging with guilt in his lap. His breathing was slowâmeasured, exhausted, like each inhale was something he had to remember how to do.
The silence wasnât peace. It was pressure. The kind that made your bones ache.
Behind him, Zemo stood in the doorway, watching. Always watching. âYou donât speak anymore,â he said quietly. âIs it shame? Or grief?â
Bucky didnât answer. He was too tired. Too empty.
Zemo took a step closer. âYou remember everything now. Donât you?â
Another step.
âEach mission. Each death. Each scream you didnât get to forget this time.â
Bucky flinched like the air had struck him. He didnât want to talk about it. Not to him. Not to the man who had cracked his mind open like a fault line.
But Zemo wasnât finished.
âIâve seen what you are underneath the silence. Iâve seen the man beneath the weapon,â he said, voice low, reverent, almost mournful. âYou think they ever cared to know you that way? Steve? Stark? Your precious team of broken things?â
Bucky swallowed hard.
âThey wanted to cure you. Erase what youâd become,â Zemo whispered, stepping close enough for his shadow to fall across Buckyâs hands. âBut not me. I never wanted you fixed. I only wanted you honest.â
His hand brushed Buckyâs shoulderâgentle, too gentle, like a ghost offering comfort to the man it haunted.
âTell me something,â Zemo murmured, reaching over to tuck a strand of hair behind Bucky's ear. âWhen the memories claw their way back at nightâwhen you wake up gasping, half-strangled by the pastâwhose name do you whisper?â
âShut up,â Bucky croaked finally, lip trembling with intensity..
âWhose name do you scream when you beg to be held together?â
âI said shut up.â
But Zemo was relentless now, leaning down, his voice like smoke in Buckyâs ear: âEvery part of youâyour heart, your soulâit all belongs to me. Doesnât it? It always has, James.â
Bucky shot to his feet like something had exploded inside him, fists clenched, face twisted with rage. âYou donât own me.â
Zemo didnât move. Didnât blink. He only looked at Bucky with that same unbearable calm.
âNo?â he said softly. âThen why are you still here?â
Bucky opened his mouthâbut the answer didnât come. Because he didnât know. Because when the rest of the world wanted him erased or redeemed, Zemo was the only one who looked at the broken pieces and whispered, stay.
Bucky turned away. His chest hurt. His hands trembled.
Zemo stepped back, like heâd already won.
âGo, if you want,â he said, voice colder now. âBut youâll come back. You always do.â
