On this weekās Good One podcast, Kenan Thompson and his longtime SNL collaborator discuss creating characters out of impressions.
Kenan, is an impression like this just like creating a character for you, but just with a singular jumping-off point?
Kenan Thompson: 1,000 percent. Doing the voice is only half of it, as far as getting to page eight on an idea. You know what Iām saying? You have to figure out what your take is on it.
Bryan Tucker: There are people who do impressions and are great at impressions, but often the best SNL impressions go up to that level of character. Dana Carvey was the best at that. And Kenan always brings his own thing to it.
KT: Like, yeah, he doesnāt mispronounce words, but that makes it fun for me.
BT: Exactly, you bring some Kenan flavor to it. Or you do that high voice.
KT: Yeah, thatās an exaggerated version of what he does. He, like, pitches up, like, [higher pitched] āWhen? When did I do this?ā I thought, How can I notch that up by ten and get to, like, Bobbyās character Anthony Crispino?
He has always been most comfortable as a supporting player. The longest tenure on the show and an Emmy nomination have helped change that state of mind.
Mr. Tucker said that Mr. Thompsonās abundant cheerfulness in these recurring segments were the likely source of their popularity.
āHeās just so good-natured inside,ā Mr. Tucker said. āYou can write something thatās somewhat controversial or might rub people the wrong way, but because heās saying it, people take it a lot easier, because they know thereās no malice behind it.ā
LJ: Sometimes when weāre doing stuff like that, we have to convince the host that itās funny. Some hosts that come in are very open, just like, āYeah, okay, we can do that.ā But some hosts really want to know the basis of it. We get real actors, and you know actors, theyāre in their head. They want to know where the character is. Whoās the character? And itās not really that deep. Itās a comedy thing, itās a timing thing. What I always tell the host when I talk to them is āsubmit.ā Submit to this whole thing, because as soon as you submit you will have so much fun. When weāre rehearsing and weāre talking about the sketch, the host doesnāt hear the laughter. They donāt hear where the laughs are gonna come in. So what happened was, at first Chadwick was like, āI donāt know if this is gonna work, or if these jokes are gonna land. I donāt know if Iām doing this right.ā Me and Kenan were like, āYo, dude, just play it straight. Youāre doing great.ā Like, we know itās gonna work, because we know what the crowd is gonna be like. But they donāt know that because they donāt see what we see. And Iām telling you, at dress rehearsal, when he finally got to say the lines and saw how the crowd laughed, it was just like, bam, bam, bam. It was so good.
