Towers of Tea
Last week (sorry guys we are a bit behind) we went to Ganache in South Yarra for a lovely European style high tea. It had your classic high tea combinations savoury and sweet flavours with a modern, and apparently European, twist.
As with any high tea, you start at the bottom, and boy was the bottom delicious. The toasted pulled pork, gouda, cheddar and béchamel sandwich was divine. We have agreed that we have literally never tasted a toasted sandwich so good, we wish there was more of it. The other savoury option was a ham and spinach quiche, which was nice but did not live up to the sandwiches glory.
Moving up the tower we had some chocolate sweets, unsurprising as Ganache is a chocolate shop. These were a hazelnut slice and a brownie mousse slice, both unbelievably sweet and rich and impossible to finish. We all agreed that the hazelnut trumped the brownie, mostly because of its nutty rice bubble base.
On top, we had a selection of macarons and Parisian honey tea cake. The tea cake was really the star of the top tier of the tower, sweet and moist and delicious. The macaron flavours were lavender, salted caramel, white chocolate and raspberry, and in all honesty they were pretty average, bar the flavour of the lavender macaron.
Accompanying this was a plate of chocolate sites, including a truffle, praline chocolates and honeycomb sticks. The sticks were delicious, but the selection of chocolates were average and not really to our taste.
Now i know what you are thinking, we were all thinking it too. Where are the scones. European or not, scones should always, and I mean ALWAYS, be included in a high tea. To have a high tea and claim it is “European” and does not include scones is ridiculous as the concept of high tea is British, and so you are already taking the idea from them. You may as well include the best element of any high tea to at least compare.
