Mixing Business with Pleasure
This morning we trekked up to Mixed Business Cafe in Clifton Hill for our weekly brunch. We don't usually head out for brunch on weekends which means getting a seat is pretty easy, but a Saturday brunch meant we were seated outside for the first time in our escapade. We were a bit nervous as it isn't the warmest time at the moment, but it was sunny in their beautiful courtyard with a lemon tree and plants everywhere! We were excited to try their apple pie waffles with maple baked apples, pecan crumb and ice cream. These were delicious, not one bad word against them. They are easily the best sweet thing we have encountered on this brunch adventure. Simple and delicious. Our other choice was a potato and rosemary rosti, with poached regs, avo, relish and the addition of some grilled pancetta. This was delicious, the rosti was exactly as a rosti should be and it still had toast which was needed. The relish was sweet yet acidic, the poached eggs were perfect and the serving of avo was substantial. The pancetta wasn't necessary but added a saltiness to the dish and was still delicious. 10/10 would eat order again. Without doubt we had no mixed feelings about Mixed Business Cafe, it was divine and we will definitely be visiting again.
Getting to the Crux of it
This week (week 15 would you believe) we made our way to The Crux & Co, quite confusingly because of unbelievable amounts of road works on Stkilda Road. The inside of this cafe is amazing, covered in plants and cute decorations, never underestimate cute decor. First, it is important to point out that they serve Mork Hot Chocolates, which in itself is a reason to go there. Secondly, the soy milk was only an extra 30 cents which is a saving for most of you poor lactose intolerant souls out there. Our first dish of the day was natural honeycomb, berries, nuts and fairy floss on brioche French toast, and yes I did say fairy floss. This was a delicious, sweet, and decadent brunch, the berries and mascarpone gave relief and the honeycomb was something new we had never tried before. There was something missing from the dish but we could not work out for the life of us what it was. This however was a minor thing, and we would order it again in a heartbeat. Our second dish of the day was zucchini and sweet potato fritters with avocado, spicy tomatoes, carrot purΓ©e and poached eggs. The fritters were delicious and crispy on the corners, but soggy in the middle because of the stacking action. Would it be better if it were not stacked? Yes, yes it would be. The poached eggs were a bit over done, but otherwise the dish was delicious and flavourful. We would visit again, but maybe after all the road works are done.

Acres of Flavour
This week we visited Fifty Acres, a little cafe on Bridge Road, Richmond. We mixed it up a bit this week and neither of us got a sweet dish, sort of. The usual sweet tooth between the two of us got the Fifth Acres Big Breakfast, which consisted of 2 poached eggs, bacon, wilted spinach, mushrooms, grilled tomato, pork sausage and a potato croquette with toast. The breakfast was definitely big, but it was just that, a breakfast. It wasn't anything fancy, the croquette was fluffy and delicious and the pork sausage yum, but it was nothing special. Now I said 'sort of' when stating we didn't have a sweet dish, as this is technically true. However the breakfast board which was ordered did come with pumpkin pancakes with citrus mascarpone and orange segments. it also included a chorizo scotch egg, which was delicious, and a tiny breakfast burrito. This breakfast board was delicious and as it had a little bit of everything it really gave you a taste of what was best on the menu. The scotch egg wasn't huge but was delicious, the burrito was small but full of flavour and the pancakes were tiny and tasty. It was three dishes without filling you up too much. The one negative would be the sweetness of the salsa in the breakfast burrito, it could have had more of a savoury flavour especially when on the board with pancakes. Everything else was perfect. We both feel we would return to Fifty Acres, if only to have those pumpkin pancakes once more.
Holler at Holla
This week we tried out Holla food and drink, an amazing cafe in Richmond filled with plants galore. The coffee was delicious and did not involve any burnt soy. The cold pressed orange juice as delicious as expected. Off today's menu we ordered something sweet, and something savoury (not that we ever really do anything else). The hot cakes were delicious and rich and, for something different, red velvet. This gave them a new richness we haven't tried before, covered in seasonal fruits, which included figs and strawberries with a raspberry coolie. It was delicious, very rich, but the fruit really balanced this out. The other option was to have it served with maple bacon, which while delicious would have been too rich in our opinion, fruit was definitely the go. The Brexit, a dish that consisted mainly of meat products, was our other choice, featuring kaiserfleich, bacon crum, a scotch egg, toast, gentlemen's relish and a poached egg. We added avocado to bring some freshness, but really nothing could prepare for the meat feast that came to the table. It was all incredibly delicious, although adding avocado was definitely a good decision as this was a rich, heavy dish. The poached egg was good, but unnecessary as the scotch egg was present, and really I excepted a bit more avocado. Other than that it was a pretty good dish. When you combine the atmosphere, the food and the coffee, we feel we without a doubt would return to Holla Food and Drink, and plan to do so soon.
