September 7, 2106 Hope Earlier this summer I listened to a photographer I respect dearly @edkashi give a presentation with his wife Julie Winokur where they basically challenged photographers to have other platforms and doors for their work other than just Instagram. They both said there has to be other doors we can use to help the people we photograph other than just the Instagram platform. I have been thinking about this a lot. I have been very reluctant to do the same thing as before -- taking an image and just putting it up on my Instagram feed -- and hoping that someone gets help. How can I help further? The search is ongoing. However tonight on my way home I was stopped at a turning green light by Al who said he was hungry. I asked him why was he out on the streets on a rainy night and he answered, "Maan I am hungry. Can you help me?" As I looked up the light changed, but then I saw that my car was the lone one at the turn so I asked if we could chat for a minute. "Maan it's all my fault. I use to work for a Fortune 500 company, I was married for 27 years but I made some wrong decisions. I am not blaming anybody but myself, but I am coming back," he said. Those words alone filled me with joy. His resilient spirit made me smile. I guess I can continue telling these vignettes until I find that door. #brooklynportrait #brooklynphotography #streetphotography #streetportrait #makeportrait #makeportraits #whenlivingisaprotest (at Bedstuy Brooklyn)
