The Nativity Scene w/the Narrative & lights in Temple Square is always a nice way to welcome Christmas. As much as I loved being there for the 1st time in years my body wasn’t so happy. I braved the 26* weather last Sat night to do something I haven’t been able to do in ages! This year Ut has been way warmer than the norm. I’ve actually been able to get out & do things this year I usually don’t get to do. I’m grateful to be out, not shut in & restricted to my bed, I feel alive again! I know we need the moisture but I’m so happy that it’s not snowing. It feels awesome to get out to see these spectacular lights in Temple Square! I could jump for joy if not for all the sad things happening in my family! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas! I pray that both my sister & my father’s Chemo goes well. We’ve recently got news that my Dad Young has stage 3 Colon Cancer, he starts his Chemo after New Years & my little sister has a small cancerous lump close to her arm pit. She’s chosen to do Chemo over surgery. I’m scared for her, I wanted her to have it cut out of her breast but her fear of not waking up after surgery caused her to choose Chemo instead. I pray it works. Our step mom Nuttall fell & broke her hip in Oct. so she’s been laid up for a few months along w/my Dad Nuttall who was just told he has zero cartilage left in his ankle & can’t walk. I don’t remember ever having this many people I love having so many major health problems happening all at once if ever! I know God will watch over all of you as I know he’ll support my family through this hardship. I’m glad to have you all here to help when life gets tough. I feel like I’m on a beach facing the pounding waves 1 after another. Each set hitting harder than the last. My legs are still upright but the pressure of the water is melting under my feet as I’m frozen in place w/out the ability to move 1 way or the other. The only reprieve I have is the constant knowledge that my faith in Christ will keep me standing to see the sunset on this crisis & a calm harbor for my heart. #cancersucks #canceratchristmas #coloncancer #breastcancer #brokenhip #faith #cantwalk #christmaslights #christ #lds#nativity#mary#baby (at Temple Square) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br33PoHBwRq/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1furrew3rnua0

Most Health Care Costs Associated With Osteoporotic Fractures Occur in First Yeae
MedicalResearch.com Interview with:
Dr. Kapinos Kandice A. Kapinos, Ph.D. Economist Professor RAND Corporation Pardee RAND Graduate School MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? What are the main findings? Response: The economic burden of osteoporotic fractures is substantial with studies estimating the annual healthcare cost burden between $10 to 17 billion. Although estimates from individual studies vary, most studies assessing costs after a fracture only explore up to twelve months following a fracture. There is little investigation of how fracture patients’ costs evolve over a longer post-fracture period. As osteoporotic fractures are one of the most common causes of disability among older adults and can translate into greater medical costs, we focused on studying Medicare beneficiaries. In fact, previous research has suggested that most of the increase in Medicare spending over time can be explained from costs associated with treating higher risk Medicare beneficiaries. Our objective in this study was to compare health care costs over a 3-year period of those who experienced a fracture to those who did not among a sample of Medicare beneficiaries who were at an increased risk of having a fracture. Consistent with previous studies, we found a significant increase in expenditures in the year immediately following a fracture relative to controls: almost $14,000 higher for fractures relative to controls. However, at 2 and 3-years post-fracture, there were no significant differences in the change in expenditures between fracture cases and controls. We note that these findings may be different for beneficiaries living in skilled nursing facilities or other non-community-based settings. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? Response: Most of the large healthcare costs associated with osteoporotic fractures are incurred within the first year of a fracture and do not persist beyond that among older adults residing in community-based settings. MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this work? Response: Despite there not being longer-term increases in direct healthcare costs for those with fractures, we found in related research that fractures are associated with limitations of functional health, including limitations to activities of daily living, mobility, and gross and fine motor skills up to 4 years after a fracture, though the effects do diminish over time. Thus, these limitations may impose other longer-term financial costs that are not quantified in our current study. Future research could examine some of these other costs that are not direct healthcare costs.
