there is a haze of smoke billowed around her. a cigarette is nestled between two slender fingers as she brought the end to her lips again. a deep inhale as she leaned back into her chair. her garden had been a wasteland. the soil was tainted and it ate and ate at the care sybill tried to provide. it was as if something had happened to turn it bad. some places were just like that, they were beyond help. in the year that she had spent here she was given no indication on how to fix her misfortune. even the raspberries, which grew as viciously as weeds, refuse to sprout.
a slow exhale as sybill closed her eyes. there was a noise in the distance that seemed to be nearing. the hair on the back of her neck stood up and there was pinpricks running up her arms. this was wrong. sybill had no sessions scheduled, she had offered no invitation. the nearest neighbor was over fifteen minutes away. when she opens her eyes there is an unmistakable crack -- the warning of lightening. sybill swore that the air was filled with the scent of gunpowder. she hastily put out her cigarette, trying to make her way to her door.
doe eyes soften, and she is stopped in her tracks. the figure is unmistakable, she had thought of her as often as she had thought of herself. alice. hands are clutched in front of her, the first droplet of rain traces her cheeks like a tear. it is the first glimmer of true happiness that she has had in awhile. “ how are you here ? ” she asked, searching the others features for some sort answer. “ oh, i’ve missed you so. ”
