nostlgic· // jack
brow bones furrow inward at the mention of how mean the flowers were. but that would not deter the pumpkin king, not when there was so much to learn. ‘well, i assure you, i can handle rude flora. i have dealt with monsters and poisons, after all,’ and they could simply ignore the giant plants, if needed. jack steps up next to alice with a grand smile. ‘please, lead the way!’
she could not promise that they were going to be on their best behavior. in fact she was a bit nervous bringing anyone back to wonderland. she expected that jack would not have such a hard time believing her about the reality of it all. “ wonderland has those too, although the roses tend to hurt your feelings more. ” there was a mirror smile and a small nod. alice began to lead the way back to the circle of doors. if you looked closely you could see the outline of a rabbit hole too. that was going to be how they got back to where she had come from.
finleystevens· // finley
without much more prodding, finley took a handful of the leashes and began to walk beside the woman, strong arm harnessing the weight of the dogs he’d offered to help with. sometimes he thought about getting another— not exactly the same as nattie, but a stray, a rescue, one fin knew he could give a good home to. but that was the problem, wasn’t it? finley was rarely in his home, often travelling to different locations to take care of ghosts and ghouls. dragging a pet around the country could put a strain on them; it had natasha. he tries his best to hide the sad and nostalgic look in his eyes. ‘are they, uh… are they all yours?’ finley asks in an upbeat voice, urging himself to focus on the sidewalk instead of his longing to pet each and every dog in the vicinity. ‘living with this many dogs is, like— a dream of mine. they have so much love in their furry bodies, and all they wanna do is give it to us,’ he reaches down to pat one of the smaller dogs. ‘we don’t deserve them,’
it was a relief to have company. to not feel as if the dogs at any moment could decide to take off without her, dragging her down the street. for a gaggle of strays they are surprising well behaved though. alana felt herself grow attached to them quickly. something about being surrounded by such an excess of love made her feel as if there had been a hole in her life beforehand. there is a slight laugh, “ no, just taking care of them for a friend. ” granted she didn’t know when will would be released. alana tightened her grasp on the leash, looking over finley. “ for the most part they are a dream. even when they get out they always seem to find a way back. ” she bent down to scratch a dog nearest her. alana was thoughtful toward the last statement, lips pressed together. “ we might not deserve them, but i think we need them. ”

auggie exhaled some smoke. there is a glaze to his features, considering the question. “ nah. ” he decided. “ i think that if there is a god. ” which if he was honest he wasn’t really sold on. “ then he is having fun up there watching us climb over ourselves to survive. ” another inhale that leaves a good burn to his lungs. “ sick fuck. ” he said with a chuckle, not taking all of it too seriously. “ or else there’s nothin’ out there. and we’re just trying to assign meaning to the chaos. ” he offered the joint over to quentin. “ what would a god have to fear from us anyway ? ”

HE MUST THINK HER SO FOOLISH , BUT THERE’S LITTLE TO DO EXCEPT ACCEPT HIS OFFER , GRACIOUSLY , and see where a fortnight will take them . “ – with two sugars , thank you . “ she answers in return , “ that – is very kind of you . “ she nods , more for her own sake than his . funny how she had spent so long devising a plan to reach this very place , but she could not think of a single thing to say to him , even with the flurry of letters they had exchanged . “ you, ah, have a beautiful home , sir philip . “ a home she was intruding , surely . “ truly . “
phillip just wished that he had time to prepare. everything in his life felt so messy and he could have mitigated some of it had he know. there is a moment as he puts the sugars into her cup before handing it to her. a pause at her words, as if he doubts them. he had rarely been described as kind and he wasn’t sure he had fully shown that to her now. “ it was kind of you to come. ” he said after a moment, gaze not quite meeting hers. “ i know it’s was a big suggestion. ” he added. at her mention of the home he looked around the room. in a way it was a stagnant piece of his life. he had never thought to change a thing in his time living here. “ i think my parents decorated it. ” he said, taking a sip of his own tea.

dirtymercy· // francesca
There was no urge, no strength to fight Daphne’s comfort, and she was quietly drawn into the lull of the hand across her back, making her feel small, like a child, but in that moment she needed it. She did not feel like Lady Kilmartin, the countess in black. She felt like a girl who still required her sister’s knowing and deft fingers to plait her hair and tie a ribbon in it. She couldn’t help but think of Eloise, who seemed very satisfied to remain unmarried, and wondered if she could ever be the same. But being unmarried was not the same as being widowed … Francesca had tasted love, known it with her soul. And now she was starved.
Do what mother does … Except that their mother had eight children, and already a small brood of grandchildren to occupy her thoughts and time. And Francesca had all of this too, from her position as daughter, sister, aunt, but these pieces of her family were not hers the way it was for her mother. When the older woman had been widowed, she’d already lived such a full, beautiful life, with more children than most. And what did Francesca have to show for her short marriage? No son. No daughter. No one. And the only one who’d known John as well as she did was halfway across the world now ( by her estimates ). She was terribly close to Helen and Janet, and speaking with either Stirling matriarch did succeed in assisting her to carry John’s memory with a smile, rather than tears, but the effect only seemed to last so long before she was alone again, in the bed she used to share with another body.
She sniffled turned her face away from Daphne’s shoulder so as to not stain her sleeve, though did not pull herself out of her hold. “I hope you are right,” she conceded, though she did not contain much of that hope within her. The idea of loving again felt … Impossible. And she could not betray John’s memory so soon by entertaining the possibility. “I thought I might – I might simply busy myself. With the estates, with all his duties. With everything. I did not want to leave Kilmartin … That was the last place he’d been alive.” Coming back to London felt like admitting reality had won, that he was truly gone.
her sister had never seemed so small. francesca had always been the one who stood on her own two feet before the other girls had. she carved out a place for herself in the world and occupied it with such beauty and strength. daphne couldn’t imagine herself in that role. being a duchess was difficult in many instances, but she was always close with her family. she had never suffered the brunt of loss. of losing the family you had chosen before she had the full chance to establish it. so when she is offering comfort to her sister there is a part of her that makes it feel like it’s a lie. when in truth, daphne simply didn’t know one way or the other.
there is a sure nod, “ i am. this is an ending, but it’s not the end of things. ” the future lingered forward and none of them could determine what was at the end of it. she knew the freshness of the wound would offer her no comfort at this time. it was full of stinging and no solace. “ do you have to leave ? ” she asked gently. from what she had recalled of the new lord kilmartin was that he was a good friend to john and francesca, daphne would not have imagined that she would have been cast away from that part of her family.
daphne wished that she had the right words for her sister. unlike her children where she always felt like she said the right thing, here felt all wrong. she had been so blessed never to have suffered in that way. her only experience with grief had been with their father. she supposed she remembered it a little better than francesca had, she was older after all. “ you could always ask mother. ” she said lightly. “ she hides it well but she was heartbroken after father passed and pregnant with hyacinth too. it took awhile before she felt like she was back to her old self. ”
nostlgic· // alice
she opened the door a mess — curls wild, hanging down her temples; her overalls dirtied with grease from the mechanic work she’d done that afternoon. ‘trying t’fatten me up?’ alice teases, trying her best to look presentable as she looks over the spread. ‘how’d you know i haven’t eaten today?’ appreciative grin is given to carlisle, perhaps softer than intended, as she reaches for the strawberry shake. ‘i’m assuming you won’t be joining me in this feast,’ a brow raises. ‘i’ve never seen you eat, so why start now, right?’ alice isn’t aware that her joke isn’t too far off from the truth.
carlisle shook his head. “ you tend to forget to eat. ” he prodded. it wasn’t as if he was pushing the food on her, he just wanted to make sure she got it in the first place. he chuckled, she had proved his point. he sat down next to her, looking at the array of food, it seemed to be to her liking. “ i ate earlier. ” he said. which was partially true his golden eyes are a testament to his recent meal. “ and i’m sure you’ve seen me eat before - you just might not remember it. ” he leaned back into the couch. “ besides, i don't enjoy this style of food as much as you. ”

bottle of tequila in one hand, legs pulled up in a comfortable manner, meredith looks around the room. when her roommates had the time to organize this party, she doesn’t know, but she cannot be mad about it at all when she finds herself sitting among them with alcohol and cristina to keep her company. ❝ you know, as bad as those things are, at least they’re predictable. it’s the normal people that scare me. ❞ the realization is obvious, something she has come to accept a while ago. normal people are impossible, normal people can’t exist. yet it’s easy to think of someone as normal; and dislike them for the very fact.
@meddled· . cristina &. meredith |
cristina raised a shotglass. she clinked it to mer’s bottle before drinking it. she looked over with a raised eyebrow. “ scare you ? ” she was a little confused by the whole proposal. “ if anything they’re so boring. ” normal people didn’t think like they did. didn’t have the drive that they had. normal people settled. she thought nothing could be more horrific than just accepting mediocrity.

“𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍 I was mama approved,” Margaret teased absently as she turned back to the game being practiced on the field. There weren’t too many students out here at this hour but she believed Carrie had a free period and, well, Margaret wasn’t much for really hanging around with the girls in her gym class. It wasn’t like she was allowed to do much if anything; the fact she was even IN a gym class should speak to the hierarchy instilled within her current school. It seemed no matter how much her parents complained about the “necessary” courses she needed for graduation, Margaret was still behind. And still uncertain if she’d even make it to the big day.
“Well,” Margaret wiggled a bit as a chill caught her off guard but was quickly shaken off. “We can do something else. If your mama would like to meet me, I can put on my best front. Most parents tend to approve of me, the fact I’m dying makes me very agreeable.” There’s a smile in the hopes of disarming any discomfort at her joke. Margaret had to joke about it or it would seize her lungs and render her immobile for hours sometimes days. Just the brief reminder she gave herself of her own mortality had her looking away from Carrie. She was sure there was a darkness to her gaze in that moment and it wouldn’t do for her friend to see it directed anywhere but the distance. Far away from them both. “Either way… I think it would be fun. Going to prom.” A beat and Margaret is smiling brightly, nodding affirmatively, “Yeah. We should go.”
unless you were god, themselves, no one was mama approved. margaret white was skilled at tolerating people who she thought were harmless but she certainly never encouraged it. carrie was certain that maggie had a better chance of anyone to garner sympathy from her mother, but she was unsure if that would ever be enough. there is a soft smile, “ you’re not dying. ” carrie insisted. as if the mention of death was somehow an invitation for it to take a deeper root. she squirmed where she sat, hands in between her knees to keep them warm. “ we can certainly try. ” carrie said after a moment. she just didn’t want either of them to be disappointed if it didn’t happen. “ worst she can say is no. ” which was partially true, but carrie didn’t want to worry her friend with the true details.

“you’re thinking far TOO MUCH, you know that?” she can’t help but grin. then again, it seemed just like dawn to overthink everything when she’d never even met this person yet. she couldn’t help but wonder what dawn had thought of her when she first started working here. “that’s good, isn’t it? you can see for YOURSELF what sort of man he is — if he’s true to his word or not.” but she could sense how nervous dawn seemed to be over all of this ; she couldn’t understand why. but dawn was very different than she was. “alright then, if you’re sure. i’ll just wait for you until you get off.” she finally said with a grin. she couldn’t help but be curious what else dawn would have to say about this online man she seemed to be fretting about.
thinking too much was dawn’s specialty. it was something she found herself doing ever since she was a kid. there was a comfort in knowing how something was going to go. or to be prepared for the worst so if it didn’t happen there was a sort of surprise. “ maybe i should cancel. ” dawn suggested, brushing the crumbs off of her apron. it sounded like an excellent option to her at this moment. perhaps what really scared her was the idea that someone might actually see her. know her. she could think of nothing more vulnerable than that. “ what about you ? any interesting romantic prospect in you’re life ? ”

something in her twists. as if she is worried about what awaits her at the shore. in her modesty she found a place to change, being careful not to let her wet garments touch the new ones she’s been provided. she is swimming in the fabric and ties it closer to her body so it won’t fall. “ thank you. ” she said, looking up after a moment. her eyebrows raise, and she pondered her options before saying. “ that’s very kind of you, but i would hate to get you off course. ” melody looked down at her hands. “ if we’re truthful, quite a lot awaits me at the shore. if i can, i would rather avoid it for the moment. ” she chewed on her bottom lip. melody knew it sounded strange, but did not know how to avoid the strangeness. a sigh that puffed out her cheeks, eyes on the skyline, feeling the ghost of the waves propell her forward. dirtymercy· // phillip
This time, Phillip did smile. His son’s was so bright it had the potential to outdo the sunlight that seared in through the parted curtains around the window, and it caught a spark with the older man who’s lips gently curled in response. He was eager, and it was becoming less apparent as to what he really wanted out of his father. Freedom from the lessons, in some form or another, but as evidenced by the words that followed, it was obvious there was more to the request than simply that. It resonated within him, a lesson he’d been learning for the last decade. They just want you, said the little voice in the back of his mind that sounded an awful lot like his wife’s. “That is why you picked them,” he repeated, feeling rather lame in his inability to form more than a regurgitation of his son’s words. Nothing could have said that with greater volume than the hush in Oliver’s voice, paired with words that betrayed a deep rooted vulnerability. Phillip swallowed the thickness that had formed in the back of his mouth, the painful sting of emotion that caught him there. He cleared his throat quietly, and slowly nodded. “Yes, I do like them.” A brief pause. “Very well, you may have your deal,” he said with another little smile making an appearance. “With one amendment. In the event that is raining on one such day, we will require an indoor activity to replace it.”
oliver thought he was being clever. it was both a way for him to get to do something he wanted with his dad, while also having something to look forward to after the awful dance lessons. he is still chewing on his lip when his father repeated his own words back to him. there’s a quick nod. “ well, something we both like, ” he added, wanting to make it sounds like he was just as interested in it. “ but something you could look forward too. ” he offered after a humble moment. oliver didn’t want it to be something his father grumbled about and was resentful of. it was supposed to bring them together. his eyes lit up, as if he were a firecracker about to burst. “ you mean it ? ” he asked, eyes wide. after a moment of listening to his father condition, he nodded in a way that was meant to be more dignified, or grown up, as if he was suppressing the joy ready to explode out of him. “ that sounds fair. ”

spencer nodded, a grin on his features, “ knew i was gonna eventually. ” he could persevere through anything, including butter. after a moment he noticed that finley pulled his sweater closer. “ sorry about the temperature, i’ve got to keep this butter sculpture at fridge temperature until he’s picked up on friday. ” he gestured to the couch if the other wanted to take a seat before nodding. “ carly and her friends are so excited about it ! you’re going to be one of their first big guests. ”

“I never doubt your word or intentions. I believe myself to be the concern,” her words teased lightly. She never felt completely as though she got to cherish any moments, head always dizzied by voices and scenarios that never stopped playing out. But when she met him, the rest of the noise felt like a symphony, tolerable in the presence and able to finally be able to speak the voice in her chest that always echoed to come through. There was something so EMPOWERING about that, especially as he seemed to stay there in her wake for another moment. “You spoil me in such a way. I’ll return the favor one day, you’ll see. I swear of it.”
she is illuminated in the sunlight. as if the very concept were made for her. it contrasted so deeply with the shadows the clung to his own back. he wasn’t made for the world up here and he was unsure if she was made for his. which is perhaps why he indulges in the extra moments. hades doubted if there was a world for them together. he tried to picture persephone down in the underworld with him, and his imagination faltered. “ spoil you ? i am just trying to provide you with what you deserve. ”

@meddled· asked ❝ ~ if we carve our initials in a tree no one will know ❞ from dani to eloise. / secret relationship.
𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝖼𝖺𝗇𝗇𝗈𝗍 𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗉 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗐𝖺𝗒 𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍 𝗒𝗈𝗎𝗋 𝖻𝗋𝖾𝖺𝗍𝗁 𝖼𝖺𝗍𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗌. because she is right. if you were to carve your initials here, nobody would be the wiser. nobody would realize that eb & dc would be the two of you. and if you choose a good position in one of the trees around you, nobody would ever find the initials. it would be… just a secret. a secret between the two of you. nobody would ever find out but the two of you would have a… tangible demonstration of who you are to each other. it would materialize what has been growing in the past couple of months. and maybe… it would placate dani. you realize that she has already done the almost getting married. and the way that she keeps talking about… telling someone, doing something. but you know deep in your heart that this will never happen. while you might be in love with her, knowing that she is the first person you have loved without holding back, you cannot do this to your family. if this relationship were to get out, if someone were to find out, you’d be ruined. not to mention your brothers and sisters would be… left without marriage prospects. and that is not something that you can do to them. for more than you love her. so, you smile at her, the nod already so clear, ❝ i think we could do that… next time we go riding, we can find a tree and carve our initials. have it be there, forever. ❞
dani loved eloise. sometimes so much it felt like the feeling took over her whole body. it had been such a stark difference from her last entanglement. she should have loved him. dani wanted to love him. and yet the thought of his lips near hers felt like a scheme to steal her happiness instead of inspire it. trapped in a lifetime of never truly living. it was the worst nightmare she had ever had. as someone who had tried to bend to the whims of the ton she would never want that for another being. especially someone she knew so intimately. there are fleeting dreams of running away with each other. going to a country where no one knew them and they might be able to live their lives out as spinsters together. there is nothing that remained for her here, not in the way that others did. there is a glimmer to her eyes and she cannot help but grin. “ you mean it ? ” she asked. there could be nothing better in her mind than to immortalize what they had fostered.
