After listening to Ep 50 of The Bright Sessions: I now want an inner snarky Agent Green to tell me when I messed up and burst into song about my bad decisionsÂ
Together Again
One thing that is haunting me more than anything about the magnanimous Episode 50 of The Bright Sessions is how Mark imagines Joan. Because I was so crushed with him to hear her tone turn so dark in his dream. Havenât we all felt that soul-deep fear that our loved ones donât love us the way we need, the way we want?
But what got me was listening to it again (and again). Her tone DOESNâT really change! All of the snarky things she says earlier in the dream sound the same as her later tone, but it comes across as playful and affectionate zinging. Thatâs a real part of their relationship, which is fine, and he deflects it with humor in reality. But if you listen carefully, her tone DOES NOT CHANGE. Itâs just that thereâs no pretense anymore. It no longer reads as playful, the venom is revealed.Â
So in every conversation where they have their loving jabs at one another, is Mark actually hearing (and fearing) that she means what she says? That Sam can do better? That heâs out of place?Â
AMAZING JOB ON THE 50TH EPISODE!!! I absolutely adored the songs. You and all the actors did incredible!!!! Samâs song was so emotional and yet wonderful! Adam and Calebâs duet had me smiling like and idiot and then crying like a baby! And Markâs song at the end was heartbreaking! Definitely one of my favourite episodes!!!! I just thought you should know! :)
Thank you so much!!!!!! My actors really are incredible - Iâm so lucky to have them and that theyâre always down for my wacky ideas.Â
And oh my god, can we talk about @evanchambersmusic and how incredible he is at writing music? And @mischaetc and how incredible they are at sound design? I work with the most talented people.
That episode was so perfect!!! Big shout out to everyone involved in the making of it; youâre all amazing!!!Â

Rose
We need to talk about âTo See What I Seeâ, you guys.Â
When I listened to it the first time, my heart swelled. The music is so surreal, it lifted my soul out of my body, and I could see it all in my mind. Itâs such a joyful, adoring ode to a secret world Rose gets to inhabit. You hear the words, but mostly you hear the tone; this is her happy place. Frankly, the first 10 or so times I heard it, I felt only the swell of love and safety in that place, singing joyfully along.
But the words tell quite a different story than the music. The tone is all how Rose feels about this gift, but the words betray the truth of how dark this really is/can be:
âI go into someoneâs head
When theyâre lying in their bed
I come in soft.
They donât know that I am there
I simply sit and stare
And learn their hearts.
But if I see that someoneâs lost,
I try to help no matter what the cost!
I change their dreams,
And then it seemsÂ
I can make, I can make them new thoughts.â
Guys? Can we talk about how DISTURBING that is?!? Just read the words without the uplifting tone, without hearing the Rose-tinted intention. And in the third chorus, she switches from saying âin to a world thatâs unpredictableâ to saying âwhen the world gets too predictableâ, admitting that she is addicted to the high and excitement and often needs a fix. The thrill of violating this private place, the rush of having this control to âknow things [she] shouldnât knowâ, it âpulls her inâ.
This may be why Agent Greenâs reprise is a very-close second for my favorite song; that goosebump-inducing slip into minor key shows the true nature of her use of this power; itâs invasive and she doesnât have the self-control she thought she had gained from her time at the AM.
âYou go where no one ever goes
And you think you know what lies within.â
[R] âI just wanted to know that I can trust them.â
[G]Â âAll youâve done is prove they canât trust you.â
[R]Â âNo, that wasnât my aim-â
[G]Â âYou think all that matter is your goal
But music bares the soul,
And their minds are not a game!
And I marvel at how far youâve gone down this path!
And now you have to deal with the aftermath.â
Iâve been listening to the latest episode on loop all day, but I canât for the life of me figure out what song Adam was singing at the end! So I gave up and I decided to ask here: what song was adam humming at the end of ep 49 đ
Though I think many of you have already put this together, it is in fact âAgainst the Worldâ from Episode 50. The moment I got this ask after 49 I got very excited to answer it after 50 dropped :)Â
After all the sadness and grief I wanted to draw something happy and ended up with Caleb and Adam from @thebrightsessions (what sad song, no such thing, psssh)
