Jane sucked in a breath of air...

The building was grey and unfamiliar, solely up to her to enter. Her feet felt like cement as she tried to move them forward, her brain willing one foot after the other. The ground was an uneven stone and clicked against the small heels of her boots. Her sliding feet caught a divet in the ground and almost had her falling to her knees, but Jane always had a good sense of balance. Never one to be considered clumsy, she managed to catch herself before falling to the ground. Her hands moved towards the silver chain on her neck as she continued her way up the hill. Her fingers came into contact with the locket sitting heavy on her chest. 

Zander, I love you. No response of course. The one time in his life where being attentive was encouraged, he decided not to. Typical. The front door approached way too soon. She wasn’t ready for this. She couldn’t. Why had she chosen to do this alone? Even worse, why had she done it in secret? “Come on Jane. This is your battle. Now fight.” She encouraged herself. Another deep breath of air to fill her lungs and she pushed open the heavy metal doors, stepping warily inside. The doorway ominously fell shut behind her, thickening the fear she held.

Jane? A voice startled her before she realized it was Zander speaking to her through the locket. Stay where you are, do you hear me? Don’t you dare do what I think you’re doing.

With a sad smile, Jane clutched at the necklace once more, this time yanking the chain, breaking it free of it’s clasp. Without hesitation she let it drop to the hard cement floor, and with it, her only connection to the outside world.
