Brick Curtain Office by @firkistudio is a small office building in Karnal, a town in the state of #Haryana #India / 2018. A drama is created in the experience of entering into the space by capturing the act of moving aside a curtain in a physical architectural frame. The wall seems to be curling on itself like the folding of a fabric. Marked by a long slit, the threshold transports the visitor to an open well lit interior full of plants. A modular and earthy material like brick was chosen to realise the curtain. The rest of the elevation is visualised as a composition of brick jaalis and textures complimenting the brick corbelling. Architecture practice PLY+, wraped St. Mary Chapel in curved brick shell with a woven pattern by using parametric design tools in Livonia, USA. The brick coursing involves rotating masonry in a clockwise orientation from a running bond pattern to a rotating pattern and back again to running bond after rounding the corner. The following course follows the same logic with a counter-clockwise rotation thereby establishing a “woven” pattern at the corner. Ironspot was selected for the brick color to distinguish the chapel from the existing hospital context and take advantage of the material’s reflective qualities which appear dynamic as light reflects off of the curving and rotating facade.
