#breathing machine

i have an oc, Ethan, who had a big piece of rubble fall on him when he was a teen. This damaged his spinal cord and lungs, making him a wheelchair user for the rest of his life. I need help from people with similar disabilities/people in the medical field to help me make his life as a disabled person more realistic. I do not have those disabilities nor do I know anything about medical stuff (I am a art history and English lit student so yeah, not gonna be a doctor ;v;). I already have a few questions but feel free to share stuff if you feel it can be relevant, I really want him to be fleshed out as a disabled character. Questions I thought about were:

Will he get any types of phantom pains? If yes, for how long?

Should he have a machine to help his breathing since his lungs are damaged?

What kind of machine? (like, a tube down the throat, a mask...)

If he does have a machine, does he need to have it on always or is it more of a chronic thing?

If he needs to always have it on, how does he eat?

Would there be other disabilities on top of these two because of his accident?

These are all the questions I can think of for now, I'll add more if I think of other questions.

Like I said, feel free to share your experience or expertise or just anecdotes really.

I had that dream last night again, about the Breath Machine. It was different, this time. I opened my eyes, and my head was encased in this plexiglass cube. There was some sort of collar around my neck--an airtight seal for the plexiglass chamber. My arms couldn't move, I was totally immobile: the cube was just barely larger than my head, not allowing even the slightest pivot. In front of me is another plexiglass chamber. There is a woman inside. She has woken up too and is staring at me. We are so close, were it not for the two thick panes between us, we might be leaning in for a kiss. I try to say something, but nothing happens. There's a shrill whine in my ear, and the next thing I know, I am gasping for air. There's a red light illuminating the woman's box, now: thin vermillion filaments of light that caught in the sharp edges and corners of the plexiglass cube. She looked horrified. She was watching me asphyxiate.

There was no air. I gaped like a fish, feeling the blood vessels in my throat throbbing against the seal. The woman must have gasped because suddenly I could breathe again. I gulped in the air--only to have it ripped away again.

Always the same, with the Breath Machine. No matter how it looked.

If only the light would pass to me... My eyes were swimming, temples pounding so hard I thought they'd shatter the cube. The woman looked on, horrified. I could tell she was trying to speak, trying to call for help. I couldn't hear her, though. Couldn't hear anything but the thrumming of my own heart in my ears...

Suddenly, my cube turned red, I gasped for breath. Deep lungfuls of air, cool in my mouth, thick as I swallowed it down. But the woman was now panicking. I saw her gasping, eyes turning red, struggling as I had been seconds ago.

I looked in her eyes, made a show of holding my breath--chubby cheeks and all. She looked relieved, quick, shallow breaths of the air she could now breathe. Then I exhaled... and she choked again. Her eyes lit up with understanding, and I made a show of holding my breath again. She took three deep breaths, in and out, and then held her breath....
