Gudetama, an apathetic egg yolk character from Japan, emerged from an observation on exhausted young people. However, Gudetama itself was never going to be a solution to that exhaustion, just an acknowledgment; and in line with business practices, Sanrio dispersed this acknowledgment across pillows, stickers, and thousands of other merchandise—a saturation which does nothing but clog up one’s environment to accurately assess reality. To be more precise, this lighthearted acknowledgment of exhaustion gradually replaces the reality of the problem, and we begin to lose sight of our world and our responsibilities.
