Three more years passed in a blur. The war with Red ended and while the all worlds turned the blame for how it ended on Ev, they were too busy dealing with another problem to notice. Aetheria was a mess, their reputation was in tatters, so they hid in Tartarus, where everything was falling apart. A Heran with a selective amnesia curse is deadly when coupled with the induced, blind rage of a Tritaran amplifier staff. Shire’s staff. The falsely prophetic spear he made with Tyrannis. And cursed flowers from Amperoney who studied under—

Ev chased constants. People, feelings, truths, certain objects. Anything that stuck around long enough to give the sense of home, of familiarity. It was why they were so involved in designing and redesigning the Vanguard’s armor (and maybe why the Council let them). It was why, when an upstart in the Iron Archipelagos named Wilson Alder brought back plasma revolvers, they bought or traded for every new model. It was why, after so many years and despite all their options, they kept coming back to Heran Manor.

Ev seemed to have been cursed to lose their family one person at a time for the duration of their now-immortal life. It started with the members of their tribe—clan, mystery cult, whichever—when the Confederation won out. Then Kalei. Then pieces of their squad—the closest thing they had left to a family—and Talis. Then it became other people they knew—Karian Chirrell, Shire Paloran. One by one people would die or go missing. One by one, Ev would fail to save them. Each and every moment left, once they realized it was happening, became a gift. Each and every person. And to be honest, they were getting real tired of losing people.

"Aftermath: 1962," spring 2022.
1962 E-10 is a very bad year for Ev.
It's one thing to get put through hell when you have friends, people you trust, by your side (1927, 1930, 1941 the 40s in general...). It's another to go through hell on your own when your friends are killed for standing by you, and the people controlling your fate (and your life, and your quality of life) tell you it's your fault.
In 1962, Ev's squad, their SIC, and his squad are executed. Their family, of sorts, is ripped from them with plasma and metal and twisted magic and they get three days to figure out how to live with that. They almost don't.
Heran Manor was always a refuge for them, but 1962 is when it becomes so much more. It was always the gathering place of the Herans and their friends, but not it was the only placed that housed the only people they had left in their lives to trust. It's the year everything gets infinitely worse. But it's also the first time they start to see Aetheria as a place that deserves to and can be escaped. It's when they start trying to escape.
They don't get far. They spent the rest of that year trapped in the capital palace with the people who killed their family. But it's a start.

"Aftermath: 1962" depicts Ev in their room at Heran Manor, the sheets askew, the room in disarray. Ev is in a state of bleak, numb horror. On their HOLOscreen you can tell they're on a voice call with Fin Heran, and they're not answering anymore. It's a scene of pure hopelessness. As it should be.
Happy Valentines Day!
(not from these goons, they don’t know what Valentine’s Day is it doesn’t exist in their world anymore. But they’re celebrating like it is.)

Clarification because this was a goofy lil doodle comic I made for fun without planning it or thinking of like, a plot:
Book 2 amnesia!Fin’s having A Realization about Ev’s personality and the content of their character. Ev, being the self-loathing little gremlin they are, does not realize this but is content to be of use anyway bc they’re a sucker (in love) with a service kink (and trauma!). Fin, meanwhile, is aware of this and makes a clarification.
Some more Fin and Ev art (because I do in fact draw them more than any of the other perfectly enjoyable couples in my projects).
Fun fact: Ev's steals clothes. Everyone's they steal clothes from Hiro, one of Fin's childhood best friends, ALL THE TIME and the man is almost a foot taller them and twice as wide. His shirts are dresses on them. They also were in possession of most of Fin's sweatshirts at one point, and they have stolen his old, worn-in undersuits as loungewear (because theirs aren't quite that comfortable, yk?)
