Okay I had an idea where the mystery "enlightenment" skill would be how you get the true ending.

When Hikari was killed during the No.6 mission, only her name and face were shown being broadcasted across the country as a funeral with only her picture was being held. It was mentioned that a total of 200 hundred officers and two other captains besides Hikaru were killed too but only Hikari was mentioned. Now it may just be that she was an idol and so the news focused more on her as her death was seen a devastating loss to the whole country. But what about the others who lost their lives? Granted I haven’t rewatched the episode to know exactly was said but it seems to only focus on Hikari as she was painted as a hero - a valkyrie to show the public she could be trusted with everyone’s lives, not just her division but the civilians too.

It makes think about how Mina is more popular with the public because of her behavior as a captain and her power taking down giant kaiju. Even when she was being actively absorbed by No.9, there were regular soldiers who were being killed by kaijus but Kafka was told to save Mina because she was such an important weapon member that her life valued more than the people below her. I expected that kind of thinking to save the most important person than the rest but it still gets me thinking if Mina did die by No.9, her death would doubt be front page news for weeks because of how she was viewed as an idol of justice against kaiju. Like would it be the same kind of attention if Narumi died? Or any other captain?

Like Mina is not just special because of her power, but it seems to me that Mina was being used a poster child to encourage the public to trust her, but at the same time, it makes Mina feel more insecure and trapped because she now has to worry about the public’s opinion if she makes a mistake that costs more lives than she wanted. Mina, to me, could’ve been interesting subplot about the dangers of pushing things too quickly on people because of their talent when they aren’t ready. As a prodigy hailed to be a missing link in defeating kaiju, Mina had to have train non stop until she was perfect, kinda like Kikoru. But in turn, Mina would’ve been so stressed and worried about her own failures that she shut out people from her life, refusing to ask for help because she is expected to do things on her own. From a soldier to captain, Mina held the lives of her entire division in her hands and one simple mistake could cost thousands in collateral and lives. Narumi is different as he holds a lot of trust in his soldiers to carry themselves and each other on the field, but Mina seems to keep her distance as she doesn’t want to ruin that perfect captain image she and the higher ups have created. It may explain why she and Kafka stopped talking as her status kept her busy and the inner turmoil of being perfect at all hours of the day and seeing her friend fail each time fueled a confusing but understandable rage that she can’t be alone, but she is because she’s special in a way that hurts her.

The feelings I have for Mina have lessened the more I focus on my own AU instead of the story as it makes me fill in the blanks because I want Mina being bitter at Kafka to make sense. Being bitter because you didn’t end up where you want is understandable, but the person who promised to be with you every single step not fulfilling that role doesn’t warrant that kind of coldness, at least not for long. Mina calling Kafka a liar makes it sound like Kafka never fulfilled his own goals but I don’t buy it because she has seen him go at it with his all for 12 times but somehow she still thinks he’s a liar?
