The Pirate Queen - Schonberg and Boublil
This week Iâm ASM-ing an opera called the Pirate Queen by the guys who wrote Les Mis (a show I despise)- Weâre the first UK production of it! - and, all our backstage jokes and grievances aside, I like the plot and some of the songs. It covers Irish clans, in particular the clan run by Grace OâMalleyâs father. Grace OâMalley is fucking badass. Sheâs in love with a guy called Tiernan, stows away on her fatherâs ship dressed as a guy, when he finds out, she lectures him that women can do everything men can, he lets her stay and she becomes captain of her own ship. BUT THEN she has to marry some stupid sexist wankbucket, Donal, from another clan to merge their clans. Thereâs a clause in their marriage that one can dismiss the other within the first three years but shouldnât do so lightly blah blah blah. Anyway, Donal is a drunken twat who thinks his wife should stay at home, hits her etc and when the English attack, he wonât let Grace come with and fight. ONLY itâs a trap and the English are luring the men away to kill Grace on the orders of Queen Elizabeth. Grace rallies the women and they defeat the English, she sends Queenieâs main man back to her with a serious message. Tiernan sings a song basically saying he aint done and heâs going to watch out for the woman he loves. Graceâs dad dies and she takes over his fleet even though Donal wants it.
Act 2 and Grace is giving birth below deck on the ship (unfortunately, itâs Donalâs) and he tries to captain the ship but noone is listening to him because heâs a prick. The English attack the ship, Donal wants to surrender, Tiernan says fuck no, Grace DESPITE JUST GIVING BIRTH, hands her son to her friend, goes to the deck and stabs a bunch of english folk. Then she DESTROYS Donalâs manhood in song and dismisses him from their marriage. BOOM. It all looks gravy here and like Tiernan and Grace are going to get together and raise the baby as their own (Good man, Tiernan) but Donal is nursing a bruised ego, shows up at the kidâs christening and is all âI wanna see my sonâ - Grace is a grown up, lets him in, ITS A TRAP! That little shit Donal sold her out to the English and Grace is arrested. Donal tries to take his son and Tiernan FINALLY kills that fucker, takes the baby and runs. Tiernan goes to Lord Bingham to plead his life for Graceâs so that she can see her son grow up. He says no but Queen Elizabeth has been listening and makes Bingham do it. Itâs all super sad and super romantic and what not, Tiernan is jailed, Grace is freed. She isnât done, goes back to her crew and is all âFIX UP THIS SHIP AND LETâS RULE THE WAVESâ She comes back later to tell Queenie that Ireland is starving because of her super corrupt Lord Bingham who is taking way too much from the Irish and WORST OF ALL disrespecting their women. This is too much for Queenie. As much as Queenie doesnât like the threat of this Irish Pirate Queen, she doesnât like that she has been lied to about the Irish, she tells Bingham to stuff it up his sycophantic arse and fuck off to the tower of London. She and Grace sit down and chat about shit woman to woman, Tiernan is freed, he and Grace head back off to their ship with their kid and kick booty together.
A lot of people think itâs a very American sickly sweet plot etc BUT I dunno, I like happy theatre, I really do. Plus sheâs a badass female role model.
Robin, reviens !
A bon entendeur.
I have no problem with people complaining about the differences between the Brick and the musical. But I wish people wouldnât accuse the authors of making those changes on a whim.
A stage production canât be identical to a massive novel. Iâm pretty sure the authors made changes because they thought they needed to in order to make the action work onstage.
I donât think they made Marius more sympathetic to Valjean after his confession just because they âdidnât likeâ the way he treats him in the novel. I think they changed it because they needed to condense the action, didnât have room to fully explore Mariusâs thoughts and feelings, didnât have room to include the âhe thinks Valjean is a murdererâ element, and had already rewritten him as a full-fledged revolutionary with nothing but sympathy and respect for the poor.
Suddenly giving him a prejudiced side, one that hurts our main hero no less, and making it feel (a) convincing and (b) forgivable, was probably something they didnât think they could do in the condensed musical format.
