Wei Ying gets off his stool and kneels in front of her to show her his phone. “Look,” he says, tapping on one of his dating apps. “I think you should try one of these for a few months before we speak any further about - uh - mystical options.”

“Oh,” she says, leaning back and pulling at the string around her neck to pop on her glasses. “My, my.”

“Have you had a go before?” He asks her, kneeling back on his haunches, pleased with himself.

She shakes her head, peering at the app, and so he hands his phone over.

“Have you had much joy with it?” She says, frowning as she swipes through the profiles.

Wei Ying suppresses a wince. In truth, it’s been hopeless. “Just haven’t met the right girl yet,” he says. “It’s been fun though - and certainly not boring.”

She looks up at him and he grins back, nods at her encouragingly.

She moves her head back and forth. “Well -,” she says.

“My job -, you know -,” he says. “It’s sort of hard to explain to a prospective partner.”
