My local newspaper are asking for nominations for a hospital hero award. Somebody that works within the hospital that has gone above and beyond their call of duty…
To me, one person comes to mind. In fact she is so lovely she positively jumps to mind.
Here is my reason for nominating Roberta…
I first met Roberta at a breast feeding course one evening, a month before my babies due date. It was recommended that I go along by my community midwife as I was determined to breast feed my baby. I’d already researched a lot into it as I know a few of my friends have struggled with breast feeding so after reading everything online I didn’t think there was anything Roberta could teach me. However I found the class very informative and was glad I went along. Roberta was lovely and if recommend the class to anyone, even if you aren’t sure how you want to feed your child.
My baby was born at 37weeks and after a very long labour, was very sleepy for the first few days of life. I was determined to breast feed but he was so tired he wouldn’t/couldn’t latch on. I was so upset and emotional. This was made worse when one of the nursery nurses forced me to give him a formula feed. His blood sugars were low and so his energy wasnt picking up. One of the midwives suggested that Roberta come and see me and she did so straight away. She helped me express some of the colostrum that he needed into syringes so that he was still getting all the goodness even if he wasnt getting it directly from me. She sat with me for hours at a time during my 4 day stay and constantly checked in on me. She sorted me my own room and did everything she could to make me as comfortable and happy as she possibly could. She even helped move my bags and then got me a breast pump to use. She made a very stressful time so much more bearable and gave me confidence that I could feed my son without needing formula. Towards the end of my stay, and with her help, Dexter started to latch on properly and was becoming much stronger. I was much more confident that once home, I could feed him myself without having to express.
I would nominate Roberta for this alone and have sung her praises ever since, but there’s more. Dexter has been slow to gain weight so at 15 weeks old we went back to the hospital to see the dietitian. I was nervous about this as I’d been told by a few people they would likely give us a high calorie formula to feed him which I was reluctant to do. While there, the dietitian suggested we speak to Roberta again. I was so happy to do this and Roberta made time for us straight away. 15 mins later, we left the hospital with many more tips for better feeding and things we could try and so much more relaxed about things. We are going into the hospital to see her again in 2 weeks and she even offered to weigh him while we’re they so I don’t have to go to the stressful baby weigh in clinic. I couldn’t be happier with the treatment/service we’ve received from her and would recommend anyone with any problems or questions about breast feeding go and see her. She knows her stuff, she doesn’t judge or make you feel bad in anyway in fact completely the opposite. She’s very helpful and encouraging and will go above and beyond to help you. She definitely deserves this award.
