Can a simple QR code be art? I strongly believe so: a contemporary artwork in its best essence.

Having the GIFs accessed through QR codes and transforming the codes as the physical part of a GIF is also a play on what is art after all.

In most art museums, people crowd around famous works like the Mona Lisa and take smartphone photos so they can keep a small representation of the work away with them. Scatena’s QR codes do the opposite – putting a placeholder on the wall reveals the true gallery within your device. It’s all very meta.

Using Fine Art prints of his QRt, is a method of distribution that exposes the complex voyeurism of looking at art, something that is usually gazed at rather than owned.

By creating prints of his “QRrt,” Scatena is able to do something similar: turn a medium that can never exist on a static page into a tangible object.
