In true Tory supporting form, the Daily Express tries to paint a rosy picture of the way Boris Johnson is handling the pandemic.

19.05.20. Daily Express:

“FRONT PAGE: HAS BRITAIN TURNED A CORNER ON THE VIRUS? HOPES were raised yesterday that Britain is winning the war against Covid-19 after the daily death toll fell to a new low. Officials revealed the virus claimed 160 lives while the numbers admitted to hospital are firmly on the decline." 

By the end of May 2020 there were 43,763 deaths attributed to Covid-19 in England and Wales. ( Office of National Statistics.)

By the May 2021, due to the slow and inadequate responses from Johnson’s government,  that figure had almost trebled 

13.05.21. ITV News:

“Eight of the Covid deaths announced in the last 24 hours were in England. The nation's death toll is now 112,282.”

02.09.19:  Former Justice Secretary Michael Gove (the man who managed to get his daughter tested for Covid-19 while NHS staff were still being made to wait) refused to rule out the government might ignore any law passed by Parliament to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

We now know ignoring the law is common place among the Johnson family and their Tory cronies.

Johnson tried to illegally close down Parliament

Cummings broke lockdown rules, as did the Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick.

Johnson’s sister was accused of “flouting lockdown to stay at her second home”.

Johnson’s father admitted to breaking lockdown rules not once but twice.

Jenrick was accused of unlawfully approving a planning application from a Tory Party donor, despite the application having been previously refused by building inspectors.

Priti Patel was “ breaking the law” by detaining lone children who crossed  the Channel.

Boris Johnson himself wrote to Tory members of Parliament last September pledging he would break the law if he were required to seek an extension of Article 50, and a delay to Brexit.

You need to have somebody leading this who is seen to have the ear of the Prime Minister, and speaks with his authority, and I think Claire O’Neil didn’t really have that. So it wasn’t the wrong decision, but the way in which it was done, I don’t think inspires confidence in leaders elsewhere in the world that the Prime Minister really has this under control.
