The last book I ordened arrived today, yay! I skimmed through it a little bit and from what Iāve read, except for chapter 3, who keeps up the same assessment of Lucrezia ZZzzZZzz, the rest of the book seems ok?? I think it might even give some new insights here and there. Iām thinking positive here bc this book was expensive and it just has to be worth my money somehow. I refuse to believe it will be another case of Blood & Beauty or Chamberlinās bio. Nope. Thatās not happening again.
August, 1499: The Pope sent Lucrezia out of Rome to act as Governor of Spoleto. Lucrezia was only nineteen but her appointment was far from being a cynical joke [...] Jofre, who accompained his sister as she left the city, was clearly inadequate to fulfil that role.Ā
Alexander made his trust in Lucrezia plain in a letter he wrote to the Priors of Spoleto:
āWe have entrusted to our beloved daughter in Christ, the noble lady, Lucretia de Borgia, Duchess of Biseglia, the office of keeper of the castle, as well as the government of our cities of Spoleto and Foligno, and of the country and district about them. Having perfect confidence in the intelligence, fidelity and probity of the Duchess, which We have dwelt upon in previous letters... We trust that you will receive the Duchess Lucretia as is your duty, with all due honour as your regent, and show her submission in all things... collectively and severally, in so far as law and custom dictate in the government of the city, and whatever she may think proper to exact of you, even as you would obey Ourselves, and to execute her commands with all diligence and promptness.ā
Later in September, Alexander had taken the powerful fortress of Nepi, strategically situated between the two main roads, the Via Cassia and the Via Flaminia [...] and fortifed it; now handed it over to Lucrezia, together with the city and its lands. Lucrezia was now mistress of two key castles and territories in the Papal States north of Rome.Ā

Hi ! Have Lucrezia Borgia's letters survived? Thank you.
hi anon!Ā my contact with lucrezia's letters were only through biographies!Ā but i think the best way to succeed in this quest is visiting biblioteca ambrosiana, in milan, where you can actually see (also) a piece of lucreziaās hair!Ā the letters exchanged between her and pietro bembo are the most famous (here is a book about it) and biblioteca ambrosiana has all the infoĀ i've known for now!Ā for more help you can always check documents that biographers use! i hope i've helped you! thank you <3

lucrezia borgia timeĀ š
to the anon who sent an ask about lucrezia and her relationships inĀ court:Ā i'm sorry but tumblr just deleted your ask and i decided to reply in text... i really don't know what happenedĀ but unfortunately itās not the first time ))): iĀ couldn't fix it but i didn't want to leave you unanswered!
well,Ā i don't know if ferrara was on your mind when you sended the ask but her momentsĀ during her third marriage are the most documented, so... i believe itās easier to focus in ferrara anyway!Ā
firstly, itās important to say that her ladies (angela borgia, nicola, catherinella among others) accompanied lucrezia from rome to ferrara,Ā what i believe was extremely positive! itāsĀ worth remembering that lucrezia was making a transition from an extremely familiar court to an unknown one, which required a time of adaptationĀ and having reliable people close to her was certainly necessary:
āAlfonso dāEste and Lucrezia became duke and duchess of Ferrara in 1505 after the death of Ercole, but Lucreziaās position at court could still have been tenuous, as she did not produce the requisite male heir until 1508. As the illegitimate daughter of a pope from the minor Spanish aristocracy, a man now reviled and denounced by his successor Julius II, she may have felt that her background and history did not match that of most noblewomen of her rank. Contemporaries such as her sister-in-law, Isabella dāEste, Marchesa of Mantua, and Elisabetta Gonzaga,Ā Duchess of Urbino had led much more sheltered lives, and did not welcome the new bride into their circle.Ā Lucrezia, however, naturally possessed many of the qualities that noblewomen needed to survive at court: intelligence, charm, skill at singing and dancing, and a pious nature.ā (Rewriting Lucrezia Borgia: Propriety, Magnificence and Piety in Portraits of a Renaissance Duchess)
in addition, lucrezia has always been known as patron of the arts in ferrara, demonstrating her aptitude and relating to several types of artists. i do believe that the most recurrent is pietro bembo, a venetian scholar and poet, whom she befriended in 1503 during his stay in ferrara! he described her as both virtuous and intellectual:
ā⦠as one who, longing rather to dress out her soul with comely virtues than to coverher body with precious clothes, devotes whatever time she can to reading or writing something; so, much as your beauty surpasses that of other ladies, the attractions ofyour mind may eclipse those of your body, and you may become, as it were greaterthan yourselfā¦ā
tbqh,Ā itās expected that lucrezia has experienced any kind of romantic affairs (despite showing respect and even love for alfonso dāeste) but i believe she was cautious in showing her interests and even political maneuvers toĀ āanyoneā, if that makes sense... as usual, members of the borgia family surrounded themselves with family, old acquaintances (usually of spanish origin) and rarely showed the same affection for "strangers"; so... for me, it's easier to see lucrezia in her role as patron of ferrara, keeping people artistically and socially active, who passed through places of service and levels of friendship!Ā
thank you so much and i hope i helped in any way <3
What do you know about the relationship Alexander and Giulia Farnese? Thank you.
hi anon!Ā i suggest you read this askĀ (also here) that ana (@ducavalentinos) answered about the relationship of the two!Ā she certainly brought more information than i ever could! thank you <3
