[...]Il primo nome pare sia stato quello di Giovanni Sforza, il marito de Lucrezia, il quale non aveva certamente ragione di essere molto ben disposto verso i Borgia: verso suo suocero Alessandro VI, come verso i cognati Cesare e Giovanni. E precisamente, due versioni furono subito diffuse sulla causa dell'assassinio. Si disse anche che lo Sforza avesse ucciso il cognato in seguito ad un grave alterco avuto con lui; e si disse anche che lo Sforza si fosse voluto liberare del Gandia, perché questi aveva una relazione incestuosa con la propria sorella Lucrezia.
