Ready to Fly: How Guren Nash Became the Bookmobile Ballerino
Lyrical, inspiring, and affecting text paired with bright, appealing illustrations make Ready to Fly perfect for aspiring ballerinos everywhere who are ready to leap and to spread their wings!
Ready to Fly is the true story of Guren Nash, a half-French and half-Japanese boy who falls in love with ballet after seeing Swan Lake on TV. This nonfiction picture book is an excellent choice to share at home or in the classroom.
Although there aren’t many ballet schools that will accept a boy like Guren in the 1950s, his local bookmobile provides another possibility. A librarian helps Guren find a book about ballet and the determined fourteen-year-old, with the help of his new books, starts teaching himself the basics of classical ballet.

foxes! at the library
fun fact, Busytown is based on Gstaad, Switzerland, where Richard Scarry moved in the 1970s from the US
“Tonight, we went to see a parade in town! And the bookmobile from the library was featured in it!”
“And it thundered and there was lightning and rain, but we stayed safe and survived through the whole parade! It wasn’t too bad a storm, (cuz if it was, we woulda had to take shelter) but being outside in even a light thunderstorm is nerve racking.”
“THERE WAS A HUGE RAINBOW AFTERWARDS!”
“Then, we got treated with some ice cream afterwards! I picked out pistachio as my flavor! It was so sweet! And really calmed my nerved up system.”
