#booflies

A follow up to my previous Hallownest farming musings.

Booflies I imagine are kinda like the ‘cows’ of Hallownest in that they utilize the space provided by Kingdom’s edge and feed on the adaptive fungi growing there. Said fungi are what is breaking down all the ash blown away from the cast off shell, so they grow like crazy and since they have been shown growing through solid stone, said Boofly keep them away from the cities where they can cause a lot of structural damage. 

So you need COWBOY BUGS pretty much, to lead the herd around to eat any potential problem fungi patches. Also you’d need to not only protect them from bastards (like goddamn belflies and aspids) but other hungry citizens. Boofly seem to me like big happy cows and probably not only eat the fungi, but nibble on any minerals exposed by water or acid wear. Nibbly nibblers :3

Booflies absolutely would love their riders and pitch a fit if anyone else tried to saddle them up. Most likely like horses, they were raised since being itty bitty to do their job and form a very strong bond with the person training/riding them. Most likely, any Hallownest rider worth their salt would raise and train their own boofly. Even for flight capable bugs, it’s nice to have a BIG ROUND friend who is always happy to see you and could maybe perform a trick or two for treats. 

Having such a big bug means LOTS of meat, fats, and hemolymph to go around. Enough that with careful planning, there will be meat available for bugs that need it. We know that ancient Rome legit had fast food restaurants so the same can be applied here. The kids may even get a toy out of it! ...and then maybe chew said toy to pieces but it’s the thought that counts.

Also saying that burgers could absolutely be a thing because wheat wouldn’t be able to grow there, but tubers would. And I for one, prefer potato bread to normal white bread. Tubers are just starch so it wouldn’t really hurt a carnivore too bad as long as it wasn’t the only thing they ate. 

Hornet picks the herbs off her burgers cause she can’t understand why a chef would ruin a perfectly good piece of meat by putting greens on it.
