Here's that little test hunter knife I have been playing with. A fascinating day visiting the Building Crafts College to see Hamish Low @fenlandblackoakproject and his team....too many to name here, build the Fenland Black Oak Table. The story is an epic tale....starting back in 2012 with the discovery of a 5000 year old immense oak tree, buried in peat. This 13 metre section, believed to be the top third of the tree, was found to be intact....the tree would have been huge...it died standing up when its roots became submerged with rising water levels, it fell and was preserved under anaerobic conditions. The sheer scale of this project defies belief...it needed the longest sawmill in the UK to cut the log into planks.....a purpose built kiln was made and it took 9 months to dry the boards, 1.6 tons or 397 gallons of water were extracted reducing the width of the boards by a quarter and the thickness by almost a half - 69mm to 35mm once dried - truly staggering statistics. Now processed, these 10 magnificent planks of beautiful bog oak have arguably become rarest and most valuable in the world. The plan is that this table will be a gift to the nation....and will be on public display at Ely Cathredral.
