The Connection, which went out on Dutch telly at the start of the summer, is hosted by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. He’s joined by three contestants, each linked by a common thread - such as three opera singers.

In each round, the players are asked some questions, most with video clips attached. Type in their answers, and there’s a point for the right answer.

But then the big question. What’s the connection between these four answers? What links UNESCO, North Brabant, singer Roy Donders, and meat?

And if you said “sausage rolls”, give yourself a shiny.

Later rounds involve some shaggy dog stories, and the contestants pick their question by means of modern hieroglyphs.

The climax of the show is the mad two minute scramble to find the connection between all of the answers. All of them, right across the programme.

There’s a playalong app, so viewers at home can win an unprize of their own. But mostly, The Connection is a solid and entertaining quiz.

It could be as arch and knowing as BBC2′s Only Connect, but isn’t. Could be as snark and snide as Guessable on Comedy Centraal, but isn’t. Pitched at the mainstream audience, and hits the mark.
