In places that have mild winters, like Vancouver, late plantings of ornamental kale will ‘bloom’ at this time of year. I see it all over the place in my neighborhood but I fear for the immediate future. We have an Arctic front moving through with a wind-chill of -15 C predicted overnight. The lovely white poppy anemone I posted a few days ago has already ‘had the biscuit’ as we say in Canada.

Yellow salsify is yet another bossy European wildflower. In the past four hundred years, it has become naturalized in in every US state (except a few places in the far southeast) and every province of Canada with only Newfoundland and the far north exempt. Salsify blooms in late spring to early summer and this morning there were only a few flowers left. To preserve moisture, their flowers often close up in the hot part of the day so it’s best to visit a salsify before noon. I quite like their enormous, dandelion-like seed head. The one at the top was four inches (10 cm) across.

I love Springtime. Every time I go for a walk, I see another little flower, absent since last year.

Hypnotic.

‘Lilac’ is both, a pretty color and a flower, that possesses a quite wonderful fragrance. It’s too bad Tumblr doesn’t support Smell-o-Vision. All I can post is this photograph.
