So Blue, the main character of the story, got into an car accident during summer. When he’s being rushed to the hospital, he can suddenly see a series of numbers on people’s heads, counting down to zero. He’s confused as the number on one of the nurses began to reach zero, but nothing happens when it does.

Blue’s parents were killed during the accident, his relatives comes to visit, and told him he needs to stay in hospital for a bit longer. Blue felt fortunate to survive this accident, and promised himself to live happily through his remaining life. 

A few days later, a new patient named Green was moved to his room, he was silent most of the time, and there were only numbers on him when Blue interacts with him. Blue finds out that Green is a author with a terminal illness, practically waiting to die. 

One day, Blue were chatting with another patient, who was quickly transferring for an operation when his number turned zero. He later learns that the man died during it. He realised that the number represent the time left until his last interaction with a person, and when the number turned zero, it means that the person will never interact with his life again. However, this number can increase or decrease depending on his action, like how it is with him and Green.

As time goes on, Blue’s leg recovered, but he was still advised to stay in hospital until further notice. At the meantime, he began to develop a friendship with green, teaching him how to do origami with paper.

Green’s past is revealed a little during a conversation, about how his family cut connections with him due to him wanting to become an author. Blue gifted him with a origami hydrangea, saying that it means “Unlimited Summer”.

During conversation one day, Blue realised that the number on Green’s head had stopped increasing. He did a few experiments to test this, and began worrying as to what will happen when it does comes to zero. 

Green promptly addressing how positive he is, and is wondering if he knew something, but quickly changed topic. 

Later when Blue’s relatives comes to visit, a sudden realisation hit him: Green wasn’t the one who was dying, he is. He asked the nurse how long he had, who replied a month or so. The nurse told him how Green knew about his condition but was told to not talk about it, which made him furious. He lets his anger all on Green when he returns, who apologised and confessed that he didn’t say anything because Blue brought hope and happiness to him, and he feared that he’ll lose them if Blue knew about it. 

When Blue woke up, he was astonished when he saw the number on Green’s head increasing on a shocking speed, as he was writing something on his laptop. The sound of keys tapping comforted him despite the confusion of the situation, but he slowly gained hope, knowing that he’ll somehow survive.

During his few waking hours, Blue looked at the numbers, with a few calculations he realised that the numbers aren’t just a few years or decades, but hundreds and hundreds of years. Green revealed that he had a lot of ideas, and has been writing the story between him and Blue. 

Blue then realised that, he was still dying, and no miracle will occur in any way. But the number represent the time of his interaction with others, and through Green’s story, their story would be written in words, and passed on generations after generations, living forever.

Soon both Blue and Green was gone. As it turned out, Green’s family had already forgiven him, and thrown a grand funeral for him. 

At the end, the hydrangea origami remained blossoming, on the cover of Green’s book, and his foreword wrote:

After you, after me,

Something will surpass the barrier of space and time,
