Why Starting Over is Okay
I start a lot of Minecraft series⦠a lot of new worlds⦠I enjoy starting over.Ā
I like seeing where a new seed is going to spawn me into a new world. I like punching trees in a panic before nightfall begins, mostly because of all of the potential. The possibilities. The anticipation of wondering what I will do here.Ā
I find it exciting.Ā
Itās a real low risk way to get that āstarting overā rush.Ā Ā
When I start a brand-new Minecraft world, it all feels so limitless. I havenāt started yet. I havenāt made any mistakes yet. The coolest finds might be just under my feet or just over the next hill. I donāt have any abandoned projects scattered around the land reminding me of all the things I meant to finish but I donāt want to anymore. Itās just me and a whole world I havenāt explored yet.
About a year ago, maybe longer, but anyway, there was a big trend to start your āforever worldā and people who had been playing in the same world for years were showing off everything they had built. Their towns, their bases, their infrastructure, their farms, and communities. Worlds had become 3D journals of their Minecraft experience and areas and builds were chapters and you could walk through their growth in the game.Ā
I thought I wanted that. I tried to start one. It didnāt stick.
Maybe I like the concept more than the reality. Maybe it just wasnāt the right time for me to start a forever world. Maybe the seed I ended up on wasnāt the one. I donāt really know. But I know Iām not there yet.
Thereās sometimes this idea that starting over means youāve failed at something⦠failed to stick with it or succeed in some way. That maybe abandoning a world after a few months, to start a new one, a new series, instead of pushing a project all the way through to the finish, youāve given up. Maybe thatās partially true. Maybe Iād be a better builder if I struggled through some projects. Or maybe itās good to know when something is over even if itās not finished.
Sometimes I start over because Iām bored, or because Iām stuck, or because I just get a new idea I canāt stop thinking about and I want to try it out. Sometimes I start over because the world just doesnāt seem to feel right. And sometimes I start over because starting over is the part I enjoy.Ā
Minecraft makes starting over very easy. Every new seed is an invitation to explore and grow. You get to see whatās over the next hill and what lies beneath your feet. You decide where your first house will go. You get to imagine what the world will become. That feeling of endless potential feels lovely.Ā
If a forever world is in my future, I donāt think Iāve found it yet. Maybe I just have to keep starting over until I find it. Maybe I never will. Maybe starting over is simply a part of how I play. And I think thatās okay.
