“Black Skin, White Masks” compelled me to ruminate on my own racialised self-hatred and move to Martinique to see what I could gain from a neo-colonial existence as a teaching assistant in two middle schools. I returned from that experience broken. My addiction issues accelerated and my compulsive over eating was dangerous. The cost of burying my femininity was twice as futile and impossible. 2007/8 was my last attempt at trying to pretend I could live as a cisgender gay who didn’t rock the boat. I experienced flashbacks to a childhood riven with bullying and dominance and from that earthquake was unearthed the truth that you can’t smother a volcano. The divinity of my femininity became clear in an excursion to a waterfall in Dominica. I was rebirthed. Frantz Fanon laid down the pathways to a therapeutic analysis of race and gender. He’s a heroic titan with fatal flaws and introduced me to a discourse and academic tradition that’s provided a home. To have a recently departed ancestor guide my pen and my cursor is a blessing. I’m so glad he gave me an explanation for the dimensions of my oppression. He made my need to express myself urgent and I don’t think I will ever not feel a searing heat in my seat when I sit down to write because of him. #frantzfanon #blackskinwhitemasks #martinique #dominica #psychoanalysis #rage
