Bouei-bu EP8 - This episode was a step in the right direction!
Yes! This is what I was hoping Takamatsu Shinji (Director) would do and he did it!Â
- Yumoto didn't save the day,
- Io and Vesta, while back in their old character boxes, were welcome assessors to the situation, and the ones to try and figure out the clues. (And Io's comment that they could learn a few things from Yumoto(?) or Atsushi may mean he's due for an episode soon that develops his character and isn't about money? Maybe?)
- Headcanon Confirmed! Yufuin is the muscle of the group! I had thought that if everyone were to not have to rely on their staffs, that he and Vesta would be the muscle/brawlers and be most likely to just kick the enemy or punch them if they were weaponless. More moments like these please!
- The final attack is share-able! (Like in Super Sentai/Power Rangers) I had thought maybe the weapon would change its order to whoever was using it, but this is ok too!
-One of the guys--Atsushi-- just went ahead without thinking and went after the bad guy! I loved it! I was hoping that would happen at some point too and it did! I don't like the formulaic "Woop., Bad guy! ALL 5 OF US CONVENIENTLY ASSEMBLE!" all the time so this is nice. I hope we'll get more moments like that.
- Not a thing from the episode but here's what I hope for next: less moments where they rely on their staffs/secondary "attacks", the Press Club duo, establish a tale (that the 5 really are the heirs to a throne...reincarnation trope), "Goin' off on my own  to take out the bad guy" moments, switch up the leads?, more antagonistic interactions between Student Council and Defense Club (or well, they might play the "At school we're not too bad, but with our alter egos we hate each otehr" card), strategic fights rather than "Ok, gang's all here. Here's a comment. Ok--let's make the  Love-Shower Staff now" formula. etc.
- On that note, I love how everyone's been growing together since the first episode. There was a better sense of...friendship this time around? Io and Vesta (seriously, I can't remember his name.) decide to go do some detective work for the sake of their friends Atsushi and Yufuin (rather than girlsgirlsgirlsmoneymoney), Vesta actually stops Yumoto from running off naively in a fun moment. etc. etc. This is a different group of friends than before. *nods*
Other than those, I really have to say the lengths at which they've gone to demonstrate how deep Yufuin and Atsushi are as friends is something. In a blink-and-miss-it moment, when Yumoto asks Atsushi if he and Yufuin went by a convenience store that they're suspecting is the source of the MOTW, and then later reveals that they suspect it's a monster that's messed with Yufuin---*breathes* the absolute relief that comes over Atsushi's face when he realizes that Yufuin really isn't mad at him is something. Quite cute, actually. Props to their VAs too.
This week's actually pulled a classic Super Sentai (Power Rangers) MOTW move--the "Monster is beat far far away and almost down for the count when it lands somewhere, becomes more enraged and grows bigger" move.Â
Speaking of the MOTW, the moment when the Conquest team transformed him into the monster was far more...spookier(?) than in previous episodes. Episode 1 was surprising, here it was just...more serious?
(I suppose this week's central parody, one of many anyways, was a Super Sentai nod.)
Well, this was a good step in the right direction and I hope we'll be in for more! ...Especially as we're nearing the end of the series. I sense we might get a resolution-with-a-cliffhanger ending depending on the number of episodes this series has as a 1-cour. (Is it 13, 14 or 15?)
(I still say Gouran is a "Sixth Ranger").
