Ampleforth has raised $4.9 million in 11 seconds in its AMPL token sale, according to an announcement on June 13. The initial exchange offering (IEO) was the first to take place on Ethfinex and Hong Kong-based crypto exchange Bitfinex’s Tokinex platform . An IEO is an alternative to an initial coin offering (ICO) in which a centralized exchange is responsible for vetting the token projects and investors, and then subsequently conducting the initial sale of the token. This IEO, ran by Tokinex, reportedly sold off 10% of Ampleforth’s total token supply, which will be available to its initial investors some time in the next few days. Ampleforth purports to be a token that is balanced around an equilibrium price target, but says that it does not qualify as a stablecoin, at least initially. The cryptocurrency is designed to periodically add or subtract tokens from an investor’s holdings in order to match exchange rate fluctuations, meaning that it has a correspondingly fluctuating market capitalization. This also means that this token is expected to have a low correlation with bitcoin (BTC) compared with other crypto assets, they say. The IEO platform Tokinex first launched back in May. Bitfinex and Ethfinex users can participate in IEOs using funds from their own exchange wallets. The platform also uses Know Your Customer (KYC) processes powered by the Blockpass mobile app for sales and IEOs hosted on the platform.

The price of bitcoin is up 48% in the past 30 days. Wondering what to make of the recent upswing? The ongoing U.S.-China trade war and a forthcoming cyclical halving in 2020 are two big reasons for the current rally, according to bitcoin bull Tom Lee, managing partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors. Digital gold? With volatility in global equities, cryptocurrency investors are looking to bitcoin (BTC-USD) as a safe haven investment, Lee told Yahoo Finance’s On the Move. “Interestingly,” he said, “in periods where people have been worried about markets, or macro risks, or policy, or geopolitical, we've seen bitcoin rally.” Bitcoin at the moment is truly acting like “digital gold,” offering an investment that avoids exposure to markets impacted by trade uncertainty, Lee said. 2020 bitcoin mining halving In addition to a bump from China trade concerns, bitcoin is also approaching a cyclical milestone. Every four years, the bitcoin blockchain — the decentralized payment rail that records all bitcoin transaction — undergoes a halving in which the reward for “miners” who record transactions on the blockchain gets cut in half as a means of limiting the creation of new bitcoins. Historically, the halving of the mining reward has been a catalyst for the price of bitcoin as supply tightens. “It's exactly one year from today,” Lee said. “And bitcoin has historically staged a pretty big rally into the halving, because you're really cutting supplies. So $9 million of day-to-day is sold by miners. It's going to drop to $4.5 million on the halving date.” As for where the bitcoin price is headed next, Lee sees an upward trend: “You know, it's easy for the market to absorb $4.5 million, so bitcoin should drift up dramatically. And you know, if you look at break evens, you know, bitcoin price to break even should you know — should be around $14,000 now. So I think that's why we've had this big rally.” Bitcoin recently cracked the $8,000 level for the first time in over a year, doubling its gains. But the current level is still a far cry from the December 2017 all-time high of nearly $20,000.

Bitseven.com - The price of Bitcoin has surged to its highest point since last November, reaching an average of almost $4,850 according to crypto asset price comparison site Coinmarketcap. Having broken the $5,000 mark on some exchanges, the Bitcoin price has since retreated back to around $4,720 at the time of writing.

Many long-term commentators on the space have taken the sudden price rise as an indicator of the end of the ongoing bear market. However, others believe the surge to be simply another bull-trap-bounce and that lower prices are to be expected.

Bitcoin Posts Big Gains, But Will It Last?

As usual when the Bitcoin price shoots up, there is a mad scramble to explain the sudden shift. Speaking to Reuters, Oliver von Landsberg, CEO of crypto firm BCB Group, offered one potential explanation:

“There has been a single order that has been algorithmically-managed across these three venues [Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Kraken], of around 20,000 BTC… If you look at the volumes on each of those three exchanges – there were in-concert, synchronized, units of volume of around 7,000 BTC in an hour”.

Landsberg went on to state that the Bitcoin price action caused by these large, anonymous orders had triggered a flurry of automated trading. However, the reasoning behind the timing of the orders Landsberg refers to remains a mystery.

Bloomberg did speculate that an April Fools article claiming that the long-awaited Bitcoin ETF had finally been approved by the SEC could have triggered a frenzy of buying action, perhaps even influencing the placing of the orders cited by Reuters. However, other prominent individuals from the crypto industry were less inclined to draw such conclusions.

Meanwhile, caring less for reasons, others have proclaimed that the sudden upwards movement of the Bitcoin price is indicative that the bear market of 2018/19 is well and truly behind us.

Sharing his sentiment is Trace Mayer, a successful investor and early Bitcoin evangelist. Mayer often refers to a metric used to judge how overbought or sold Bitcoin is. This “Mayer Multiple” has been indicating that Bitcoin has been a good buy for the last few months

Other prominent commentators on the space reflected on investor rationale and how it might impact the rest of the crypto market. The Crypto Dog speculated that any bullish upswing for Bitcoin might be amplified for altcoins

Meanwhile, popular podcaster and co-founder of Morgan Creek Digital, Anthony Pompliano, simply stated

However, not everyone with a generally bullish outlook on the Bitcoin and crypto industry shares the short-term optimism of those mentioned thus far. Tyler Jenks, the founder of Lucid Investments and an experienced trader, still believes that the price must first return to its pre-2017-bull-run levels before another bull market can start properly. This, according to Jenks, would involve a drop to between $1,000 and $2,000. More information about Jenks’s projections can be found via his YouTube channel, HyperWave.

Despite stating that Bitcoin is still very much in a bear market, Jenks does have optimism for its future. He believes the number one digital asset by market capitalisation could one day serve as a global reserve currency. In this scenario, the investor sees a price of over $10 million per BTC long-term.

Bitseven.com - The way I see it, investors in 2017 — and specifically in Q4 — wanted to buy Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) for the sole purpose of exchanging it for specific ICO tokens they wanted to invest in. The buyers of Bitcoin and Ethereum did not want to own Bitcoin or Ethereum. They wanted to buy the newly issued initial coin offering (ICO) tokens, but they needed to buy Bitcoin and Ethereum as a short way to get what they ultimately wanted. The owners of Bitcoin and Ethereum did not want to sell. They were watching the price of their holdings increase, so why would they? They were also believers in Bitcoin and Ethereum. So, in a “bid-ask world,” the price went up. Then, those startup companies that completed their ICOs became whales, which began — as a group — to unload their tokens in December and January, thereby flipping the dynamic of the huge demand for Bitcoin and Ethereum to all sellers of Bitcoin and Ethereum. After the New Year’s hangover faded, the startups needed to exchange their crypto for fiat in order to pay engineers and build their startups. Then, it was a run-on-the-bank panic. Pressure from the United States regulators in Q3 and Q4 of 2017 resulted in a slowing and near total halt of ICOs by early 2018. After that, ICOs either stopped or radically slowed. New token issuers began to accept fiat without the need to pass through Ethereum, which killed more demand and left only sellers and “hodlers” and no buyers. In a “bid-ask world,” the market tanked. An interesting dynamic of the current market is that the prices of all cryptocurrencies are highly correlated to each other. Just look at the price of any token on CoinMarketCap, and you will notice a perfect correlation among the prices of most of them. Bitcoin and Ethereum go up and down together, and most other tokens are correlated in the same way. It shouldn’t be that way, but without any banks analyzing and reporting on these startups — the way they do for Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. — that’s the way it is for now. So, Bitcoin can raise or drop the price of your token, but it now appears that gravitational pull works in both directions. In 2018, something else developed. It became clear that all of these funded ICOs were not diligenced by real tech experienced angels or VCs — they were mostly not tokens you would really want to invest into. Previously, all of these coins were correlated to the rising price of Bitcoin and Ethereum, but now it is dragging them down. They are all correlated, and the big section of the overall market cap is sinking the ‘crypto ship’ in general. What will happen is that all of these weak startups will eventually be flushed out, and we will be left with some decent and even amazing companies. Today, the consumer retail investors of Southeast Asia and around the world are no longer gambling and throwing cash at the latest ICO to pitch at some blockchain event — or at least not at the volumes of Q4 2017. It used to be 20 percent institutional (VC) investors and 80 percent retail. Now, it's 80 percent institutional investors, if not more. It makes sense to me that, if strongly branded VCs like a16z, Pantera Capital and 7BC.VC invest into a startup from their wide funnel of investments after conducting VC-grade due diligence, consumer retail investors will want to invest — following the VC's lead in jurisdictions where this complies with local securities law (or, in the U.S., if the startup filed an S1, Reg A+, etc.). Now is the time for the arrival of experienced VCs to raise real VC funds, generate large volumes of deal flow, process that deal flow with fully centralized and decentralized teams qualified to conduct proper due diligence, fund the best ones, as well as help these portfolio companies execute and manage investor risk via diversification and portfolio construction. We have seen a return to sane equity funding — and not just for tokens. Investors now own equity and tokens. Some “pure play” decentralized cases require only tokens — but again with real, old-school due diligence — before just throwing money around. We are also seeing a return to market valuations, rather than a team of high school dropouts seeking a $50 million or $100 million pre-money valuation without ever having met a payroll or accomplish any substance prior to getting that kind of valuation. The new companies to be funded in 2019 — and to be listed in 2019, 2020 and 2021 — will be far better on average than the 2017 cohort, resulting in a rebound in the market. Experienced VC-backed entrepreneurs are now working on blockchain startups, which means the population of management teams has evolved beyond the original Bitcoin anarchists. Bitcoin itself is resilient, proven by its survival of multiple Mt. Gox-type events and numerous up-and-down cycles. The long-term curve for Bitcoin is up and to the right. After the infamous coins run out of cash and disappear, the market will become much more robust. Many of the managers became delusional due to their experience of traveling the world and completing their ICOs, thinking that BTC and ETH would only go up and up while failing to exchange enough of their crypto for fiat. Not only did they have startup risk, but they foolishly added FX (foreign exchange) risk. So, the good news is that these weak, never-should-have-been-funded startups will run out of cash sooner than expected, because their crypto is worthless when converted to fiat than they thought at the time they completed their financings. The flushing out of these coins currently weakening the market will drive the market up. Today, startups exchange their crypto into fiat the moment they get it. I also predict that we will see a few killer startups take off and generate mass adoption, which will bring mainstream users into the crypto world and — in a gravitationally correlated world — this will lift the tide of the entire market. We will probably see some video game become a huge sensation — like Angry Birds — or something that will drive the adoption of a token. I expect to see something else come along that no one ever thought of — like Skype — that everyone begins to use, which will pull huge populations into the crypto world, as the value will just simply be there. It is imperative that all businesses move onto the blockchain so that no party can tamper with the numbers of how many “widgets” were sold or with who gets paid what. All business, government and health care data should be on the blockchain — and pretty soon, it will be unacceptable without it to enter into a business agreement and trust the other party to tell you how many widgets were sold in China, the U.S. or Africa. Once these business transactions or elections are on the blockchain and no one can tamper with the data, all sides can trust each other. The big picture here is that the market will see a major rally and long-term trend up and to the right. 2019 might be an excellent time to invest in a blockchain-focused VC fund or invest into blockchain startups taking on-board lessons from top-performing VCs that have a strong entrepreneur-experienced investment team with experience in achieving top-quartile venture capital IRR performance and cash-on-cash performance.

Bitcoin Tumbles as Cryptocurrencies Join Global Equities Selloff

(Bloomberg) -- There were no good spots for investors to hide in Thursday’s global equities rout, as cryptocurrencies joined the selloff.Bitcoin, the largest digital currency, fell almost 7 percent to the lowest since mid-August, before paring its loss to 5.1 percent as of 8:08 a.m. in New York, according to prices compiled by Bloomberg. The Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index tumbled 10 percent, headed for a third day of losses.Rival coins Ether, XRP and Litecoin retreated 11 percent to 13 percent.

“The global sell-off in equities has indeed spilled over to the crypto space,” said Ryan Rabaglia, head of trading with cryptocurrency dealing firm OSL in Hong Kong. “The days of crypto being the safe-haven play and having a high degree of detachment from the rest of the world are seemingly diminishing.”Increased institutional attention on the cryptocurrency space has led to greater correlation with traditional assets, although this trend is not expected to last, he said.There is some speculation of Japanese day traders selling to satisfy margin calls on stocks. Bitcoin is positively correlated to many stock indexes in Asia. That’s where the biggest declines are on Thursday, with China’s Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index tumbling 5.2 percent. 

While Bitcoin has mostly stayed above $6,100 this year, some analysts are watching out for a lower resistance level.“With the 2018 low of $5,800 being tested a number of times, our sights are set at that level for all further sell-offs,” Rabaglia said.The biggest stock sell-off since February rolled from the U.S. through Asia Thursday, with most benchmarks across the region tumbling at least 3.5 percent. Concern about the impact of the U.S.-China trade war, 10-year Treasury yields touching a 2011 high and the Federal Reserve’s monetary tightening are all contributing to market nervousness.Cryptocurrencies have given up more than $600 billion in value from a January peak as the boom in initial coin offerings last year fades further into memory. Mainstream adoption of digital currencies has failed to materialize this year amid a series of exchange hacks and increased regulatory scrutiny.“It is clear by now that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies represent the mother of all bubbles,” Nouriel Roubini, chairman at Roubini Macro Associates and a professor at NYU Stern School of Business, said in prepared testimony for a U.S. Senate Banking Committee hearing on cryptocurrencies and blockchain scheduled Thursday in Washington. “No asset class in human history has ever experienced such a rapid boom and total utter bust and implosion.”In a scathing testimony, Roubini argued the blockchain technology that underpins Bitcoin and other cryptos is “the most over-hyped and least useful technology in human history” and “nothing better than a glorified spreadsheet or database.”Coinbase Inc., one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, took an even bigger hit than the broader market, according to data collected Tribe Capital. At the same time, the institution warned users about the risks associated with investing and using virtual currencies.Additionally, the RBI announced that banks functioning under the authority of the central bank would not be able to continue offering services to individuals dealing with virtual currencies or crypto exchanges. Moreover, the bank urged financial institutions to stop providing services to crypto users.After this decision, most of the crypto-related firms decided to contact the Supreme Court in order for it to search a solution to this issue. The next week, the hearing related to virtual currencies will take place in the country.
