First fishfriday in 2020. Starting off with jawless fish, cause you know they are my favorites: pteraspis and birkenia. Pteraspis and Birkenia have two quite different styles of protection, with pteraspis having heavy armor plates in front and smaller scales in the back, whereas birkenia had rows of elongate, bony scales laid out like tiles. Giving it a little more fexibility but also less protection.

Despite resembling a modern fish in appearance, Birkenia lived long before fishes evolved a movable jaw. It’s recognizable by the uniquely shaped scales on its back and an armorless head, unlike most other heavily guarded jawless fishes at that time.
