masterpost (please no editing or concrit, I am very migrained and words are hard)
Thank you all for joining me on this wild, weird journey. It has been an adventure and a privilege to take you with me about the question of 'what if Danny was birb'.
Danny carefully picked up one of the orchids from the bin that they had been soaking in. The little bastards were tricky to work with, but Danny felt like he had finally turned the corner with them. Some of the plants had blooms forming, which was an exciting change. Danny was maybe a little too amused that one of the plants with blooms was the ghost orchid. He set it gently back in its spot.
âYou all better behave and actually bloom,â he told the plants. âRight now you all are the shame of the conservatory, I hope you know that. Look at everyone else, theyâre flourishing. Even the tropical corner is happy now that I have the right sore of mist set up for them. One would think that would be enough for all of you all too, but no, you also need weekly baths. Prima donnas, thatâs what you are.â
âDanny⊠are you insulting the orchids again?â
âThey deserve it Hummingbird and you know it,â Danny said as he turned. He smiled at the pair in the portal. âThank you again for helping, Wulf.â
âYeah, thanks,â Tim said. He dropped smoothly from his ghost form to his living as he exited the portal. âIâll see you in two weeks, right? For the duel with Pandora.â
Wulf agreed with a little huff and gave them both a wave before he let the portal close.
âA duel with Pandora?â Danny asked. He was so very proud of how far Tim had come in such a short time. Being a Robin helped, of course, but so much of it was also just Tim finding his way within the Infinite Realms. Danny hadnât even had to (or been able to) help much over the last few months due to how little time was wise to stay transformed.
âOh, yeah! Since she had her spear and I use my quarterstaff, you know?â He practically bounded forward to take a cookie off the plate that Danny held up in offer. âThanks. But sheâs giant and has four arms so Wulf gets to be on my team too.â
âYou better watch out for those four arms too, she can be brutal.â
âBut thatâs whatâs going to make it so fun!
âYouâre getting cocky, Hummingbird,â Danny said. He reached out to brush back some of Timâs hair. It had gotten long. âItâs a good look on you.â
Tim shoved the cookie quickly into his mouth so that he could bat away Dannyâs hands. âDaaaaad stop.â
âNo,â Danny said cheerfully. âIf Iâm your ghost dad then I get to be proud of your progress. Give me another month or two and weâll do a real tour of the Realms so that I can show you off.â
âBut your healthââ
âIs better every day,â Danny said. âIâm going to be better than I have been in years soon with the way that Bruce and Alfred both hover. Moving into the Manor is going to be the best thing for my health.â
âAnd Bruceâs too,â Tim said as he took another cookie. âYouâre making him actually sleep in some. And he goes to work more just so that he can stare at your ass when youâre working.â
âTim!â
âItâs true!â
Danny rolled his eyes and picked up the pruning shears. His shrimp roses had thrived a bit too much in the new settings and needed a bit of work. âSpeaking of Bruce being better⊠when are you going to talk to him? Itâs has been months now.â
Tim dropped down into a seat and chewed morosely at the cookie. âYou know why I havenât.â
âI do, thatâs why I didnât bother you before now, sweetheart,â Danny agreed. âYou werenât wrong that Bruce has been dealing with a lot of different thing, and he did need time to be able to compartmentalize them and work through them one by one.â
Tim winced. âThose few weeks of him actually dealing with my having die were not pretty.â
âHe did get a bit stifling.â
âA bit?â
âAlright, a lot,â Danny said with a chuckle, âbut I think that heâs gotten through the list now.â
Tim gave a little snort and started picking at his nails. âSo what, I just⊠throw another thing at him now that heâs better?â
Danny came and crouched down in front of Tim. He reached out to stop the picking before Tim made himself bleed with the nervous tick. âSo you be honest with him about a really, really big secret that youâve been keeping, because he deserves to know. I get why you waited, but itâs time, Tim. Iâm here with you, Iâll be next to you the whole time, and Iâll still be here when itâs dinner time. And the breakfast the next day and the next dayâŠâ
âI get it! My dads are sleeping together.â
Danny laughed and pressed another cookie into Timâs hands as he stood. âHow horrible for you.â
âWhatâs horrible for Tim?â Bruce asked, almost absently, as he wandered into the conservatory with his attention on his tablet.
âThat you and I are sleeping together,â Danny explained. He pressed a kiss to Bruceâs cheek and took his tablet as he whispered. âGo sit down with your son.â
âRight,â Bruce said, brow raised in curiosity. ââŠhow horrible for Tim.â
âIsnât it? To have his dads together,â Danny said with a pointed motion at Tim from behind Bruceâs back.
âA truly tragic life,â Bruce agreed somberly as he sat down next to to Tim.
They looked good there in those wicker chairs, surrounded by the happily growing greenery. They looked happy, despite Timâs nervous mood. Danny pondered if he could talk Alfred into letting them have lunch out here one day, like an indoor picnic.
Tim looked down at his hands. âYou know that I do think of you as my dad, right?â
âI do, and Iâm always honored,â Bruce said, brows pinched together in confusion. He was clearly trying to work out where this question came from. âI know there were times that I more than messed up with you andââ
âNo, itâs not about that,â Tim said quickly. âWeâve talked about that.â
âAlrightâŠâ Bruce glanced from Tim to Danny. âIs this about you calling Danny your dad also even though we arenât married yet?â
Tim gave a little snort. âIâm not as formal as Damian, waiting for it to be all official or anything. I mean, you two are already engaged. Besides, Danny was my ghost dad first.â
The humor made Bruce relax a little. âThat is true. Something that Damian will always be jealous of, I fear.â
âYeah⊠well, that, um, might not be all heâs jealous of,â Tim said.
âIâm afraid you really have me at a loss here, chum. Whatâs bothering you? I promise weâll work through whatever it is, even if it means more therapy.â
âYeah, it might mean more therapy,â Tim mumbled. He glanced up at Danny, and Danny made sure to smile back. It seemed to help, because Tim finally started actually getting to the matter. âSo, when I went to Dannyâs for those days, before I was taken⊠it was because I learned something that I had trouble⊠processing, I guess.â
âAnd it was no problem to help you work through it,â Danny assured Tim.
âHe did too. I was going to coming and talk to you about it that Sunday when I was taken by the Court,â Tim said. (Danny had to resist the urge to growl at the name.) âBut then, I mean obviously all of that happened and there were a lot of other things to deal with. And⊠I guess Iâve also been putting it off, which I hope youâre not mad about.â
âTelling me whatever it is now is alright,â Bruce assured Tim. âYouâre right that there has been a lot to deal with.â
âItâs just that⊠like, you were already my dad, but the others were teasing me and I got curious, you know? And so of course I looked into it because Iâm me, which is a mess I know, butââ
Bruce reached out to stop Tim from picking too hard at his fingers. âTim, breathe.â
âRight,â Tim said before he listened and took a deep breath. He let it out slowly. âWhat Iâm saying is that I ran our DNA. Youâre actually, biologically, my dad.â
Bruce blinked several times, like he was trying to reboot his mind over what he had just heard. Danny covered his mouth so not to laugh. This was a very serious moment, after all. Then, suddenly from the doorway, âWhat the f old man, did you sleep with a married woman?â
âIt wasnât the first time I did, wait, what I mean, she was separated from Jack at the time,â Bruce said, head swiveling from Tim to Jason at the door to Danny and back to Jason. âAnd I of course wore protectionââ
âI really donât actually want to hear about you sleeping with my mom,â Tim said with a wince. âI just⊠I mean whatever happened it doesnât change that, um, I mean⊠biologicallyâŠâ
Bruce reached out and pulled Tim into a hug. âYouâre my son. Biologically or not, you were already my son and this does nothing to change that. I am just⊠Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry that I didnât know, that she didnât tell me if she knew. Iâm sorry that I wasnât there for you all of those years.â
âThatâs sickeningly sweet,â Jason said and then winced when Danny elbowed him.
âLeave them alone, this is a big thing for both of them,â Danny said softly.
âDamian is going to freak out, in both bad and good ways,â Jason warned, just as softly.
Danny nodded. âI know, Tim talked about it some. Iâll help handle him.â
âSure.â Jason rubbed at his side as he looked back at the father and son pair. âChrist, all those jokes and they really two peas in a podâŠâ
Danny hummed. Jason was right, but he also wasnât. There was certainly much of Bruce that came through in Timâs personality, but Tim had grown up removed from that and very much into a young man of all his own. This was just a new connection to explore. âCome on, Iâll go with you to pick up Lian. Those two could use some time alone.â
âWho said you were invited to come pick up Lian?â Jason asked even as he turned to start walking.
âLian, because she loves me,â Danny teased. He traded the pruning sheers for his cane by the small table at the door. He didnât really need the cane much right then, but heâd gotten used to having it with him over the last few months. And it was a rather stylish looking cane that Bruce had made for him, what with the swooping heron head that made up the handle.
âYeah, yeah, her grandpa Danny,â Jason said. âShe just loves you right now because of the night light you gave her. Which, thanks, by the way, sheâs never slept better.â
Danny nodded. âGood. I hoped it would help. The ghost in it loves eating nightmares.â
ââŠyouâre fucking with me.â
âJust a little ghost. Itty bitty.â
âDannyâŠâ
âItâs basically the intelligent of a hamster.â
âDannyâtell me your fucking with me and that you did not plug a ghost into my daughterâs wall.â
Danny gasped dramatically. âJason, are you being anti-ghost?â
âDanny!â
Danny just laughed and kept heading for the doorway. Maybe it was a little mean to pick on Jason, but that was slowly becoming part of how they interacted with each other. It was just a little piece of the puzzle that was Jason and Tim and every single one of the childrenâofficial and unofficial. It was all just a little piece of this wonderful family that Danny was becoming part of.
It was all just a little bit of the life that Danny was going to do his damnedest to live.
I created a needle felt Birdritch Danny Fenton based on Clock's wonderful design (link) for their birdritch fic series which is wonderful (another link)
He was so much fun to make! I started out with a sewn and stuffed felt shape to which I sewed steel wire legs and started felting on top of. He is pretty light thanks to his stuffing based core which helps him support himself on the long skinny legs.
So uh that last birdritch chapter amiright? Seriously tho everyone go check out birdritch by @clockwayswrites đ I seriously can't wait for the next chapter đđ

masterpost, no editing or concrit please. I'm very tired and hurty, but it's nice to get back to bird and enjoy it. I hope y'all enjoy it too.
âI feel like some sickly Victorian maiden,â Danny said as Bruce lifted him from the bed. âIâve been sent to the seaside for rest and fresh air.â
âI donât know if the horde of children is normally a part of that package,â Bruce replied.
A few different hands emerged from the mess of pillows and sheets to flick Bruce off, which made Danny laugh. It felt good to laugh after having spent the last few days in unconscionable amounts of pain. He was still in a huge amount of pain, but the drugs were working through his system now, and his soul was warmed by haunt and horde a like. (He tried not to think too much on the last part.)
âNo, but I like the horde,â Danny said.
âThanks ghost Dad,â Tim yawned.
âYeah, thanks ghost Dad.â
âStephanie?â Bruce asked. âWhen did you get here?â
She hummed from somewhere near the foot of the bed. âEarly morning I guess, after, you know.â
âRight, well, maybe you can take another child with you and go see about breakfast,â Bruce suggested over his shoulder as he carried Danny towards the bathroom.
Danny rested his head against Bruceâs shoulder. âThank you,â he said softly.
âFor what?â Bruce asked.
âFor letting me into your home. Letting me close to your family. I know how important they are to you and⊠itâs just⊠it means a lot to me, especially as a ghost,â Danny said.
âIs this another thing to talk about when we go into details about being a ghost?â Bruce asked. âAnd youâre very welcome.â
âIt will be, yeah,â Danny agreed. He knew that Bruce or the children wouldnât be upset at him for his ghostly needs, but he didnât want to cause them any unease over it either. It was bound to at least be awkward.
âAlright,â Bruce said and pressed a kiss to Dannyâs temple before setting him down on the counter. âBut first cleaning up and then there are some⊠Wayne things that you should know about. Itâs past time. Do you think youâre up for a shower? You donât have to stand, thereâs a bench seat.â
Danny tilted his head, curious, but did his best to stay focused. âA shower sounds down right hedonistic right now.â
Bruce chuckled and moved to turn on the water for it to warm up. âA shower it is then.â
And wow did a shower feel amazing. It was a little weird at first to need Bruceâs help getting clean, but Bruceâs touch was gentle and intimate in a way that settled Dannyâs nerves. After drying off one very long shower later, Bruce slipped out of the bathroom in a robe only to come back with a stack of clothing sitting on a wheelchair.
âA wheelchair?â Danny asked, head tilted. âNo, I mean, that makes sense, but you just have a wheelchair?â
âDick was a very active child,â Bruce said with all the tired resignation of a parent who had seen it all. âThe easiest way to keep him off an injury was to put him in a wheelchair. It just became a thing to keep in the manorâs medical supplies.â
Danny chuckled as he put on the clothing that Bruce passed him. âIt worked for Jason and Stephanie too, didnât it?â
âOh, absolutely,â Bruce said with a small smirk. âIt still works on Dick.â
âOf course it does. I donât know if it will work on me, but I canât go far anyways,â Danny said. He accepted Bruceâs help into the chair and sank gratefully into the surprisingly comfortable surface. He hated that he was exhausted by a simple shower, but he was exhausted.
Bruce kissed his cheek. âRemember, youâre a sickly Victorian maiden, let yourself be taken care of.â
âWell, in that case, onward to breakfast, my good man!â
âYour wish is my command.â
And onward they went, down a tucked away elevator that Danny assumed had been put in for Barbara, who had shown up for the meal. The table was full of chatter, stolen food, and so much life. Danny didnât have the energy to participate much, but it didnât matter when he was surrounded by all of that. Best of all, Tim didnât seem hindered in the least from what he had been through. He was still Tim, just with a little extra. It was the better than Danny could have hoped for when he found Tim on the edge of death due to those damned false owlsâ
Tim stopped what he was doing and jerked his head towards Danny so suddenly that all the rest of the table froze. It was like everything had suddenly died away and Danny hated it.
âIâm okay, Hummingbird,â Danny tried to soothe. âI was just thinking that I have some clean up to do once Iâm well enough.â
Tim frowned. âYouâre going after the Court of Owls?â
âIs that what theyâre called? I like false owls better,â Danny admitted.
âFalse owls?â Dick asked. âWhy are they false?â
Danny blinked at Dick. âBecause they arenât real, not like you are. Iâsorry, thatâsâŠâ Danny rubbed at his eyes. âEver since this transformation of mine started, Iâve been thinking of certain people in terms of birds. I hadnât really put it all together until after⊠everything.â
âPut what together?â Dick asked. âI⊠am I an owl?â
Danny hummed in confirmation as he tried to put everything into words that they could understand. âGhosts⊠and halfaâs arenât immune from it, we just get away with more, have haunts. Just like you would think in a traditional sense, a place or sometimes a thing, that we are attached to. With our haunts might come âfraids, a group of people or souls that are⊠ours. Ours not in so much a possessive way as a protective way.â
Some of the table nodded as Danny paused. He had to say this, he knew, but he still wasnât ready. âI havenât had a haunt since I left my home town which I used to protect. My sisters and two friends are still in my âfraid, as are my sisterâs family, but itâs a different sort of thing with them so far away and out of my haunt. Frostbite seems to think⊠and well I donât think heâs wrong⊠that Iâve started counting many of you as part of my âfraid. Itâs why when Tim was taken I noticed so quickly and went so⊠feral about it.â
âWe are that important to you?â Damian asked in a small little voice.
It made Danny look up. âOf course, chickadee. Iâit may have started with the attack at WE or perhaps⊠you all are rather liminal. It likely made it easier for me to form that connection⊠and though it still feels sudden I knowâŠâ
âDanny,â Bruce interrupted. âI think that there is something we need to show you, before things go any further. It might clear up a few things.â
âIâokay?â
Bruce stood and moved behind Dannyâs wheelchair. âFirst we need to go up, and then we need to go down. Quite a bit down.â
masterpost pls no editing or concrit. I am sick and all the ow
The accessible lift to the Batcave was tucked away in the old servantâs quarters. Half the children charged ahead to take it down first while the other half ran upstairs to take the study entrance. Danny watched them go curiously.
âThis is a little ominous,â he pointed out, not that he sounded at all bothered.
Bruce chuckled. âSays the man who we followed a werewolf through a glowing portal for.â
âYou have a point,â Danny agreed. âBut believe me that heâs one of the better options.â
âWulf was very polite,â Bruce said. âDamian was sad that he missed out on a chance to meet a real werewolf.â
âIâm sure Wulf would happily meet Damian.â
Bruce hummed and then gave a pause before he felt the need to add, âDamian is not allowed to insist he be turned.â
âNo?â Danny asked through barely contained laughter. âIâm sure I can make that clear to Wulf. Though logistically I donât know if he could turn a living as a ghost? Or if it even works like that. Oddly itâs never come up.â
âOddly?â
âYou donât know my friend Tucker.â
âAh.â Bruce wanted to say that he was sure that there would be the chance to get to know this Tucker, but considering he was about to reveal who they were⊠he cleared his throat. âWell, Iâm sure that Damian will ask many interesting questions if he gets the chance.â
âDoubtless,â Danny said absently, distracted as he watched Bruce open the door to a disarming linen closet. Bruce stepped in and moved a stack of towels so that he could press a piece of wood to reveal the hidden keypad. A moment later, the back wall slid open as part of the elevator door. âI think itâs even more ominous now.â
âReally? I think all mansions should have secret passages,â Bruce argued as he pulled Danny into the elevator.
âOh, no, absolutely,â Danny agreed, âbut itâs never worked out to well for me. My godfather was fond of secret passageways⊠and experimenting on me.â
Bruce gripped the handles of the wheelchair tightly. âPardon?â
Danny hummed. âMy youngest sister is actually my clone. I just call her sister because itâs easier.â
âYes, I imagine so,â Bruce said tightly. âPlease know that if I ever meet your godfather, Iâm going to punch him.â
âVlad would deserve it,â Danny said. âHe was always a⊠oh.â
Bruce pushed Danny out of the elevator in silence.
The kids were gathered around the meeting table, each one nervous though they showed it all differently. Even Jason, for all his feet were up on the table, was tapping at the arm of the chair. Bruce needed this to go well for them. He needed this to go well for Damian and Tim especially. The older ones wouldnât have any large issues moving on, but Damian was already so attached. And it would be good for Tim and even Duke to have another adult to talk with. Bruce wasnât concerned about Danny leaving Tim stranded without help or training, but it would make things tense. Of course Bruce would do everything he could to make things easy despite the awkwardnessâ
âThis explains so much,â Danny said, interrupting Bruceâs thoughts.
âIâwhat?â Bruce asked.
âI justâAncients!â Danny gestured. âYouâreâthat meansâyou all! I met you before I met you! The first time I met you I basicallyâŠâ
âBrooded us,â Tim supplied shamelessly.
Danny dropped his face into his hands. âBrooded you. The first time I met you I basically brooded you all!â
âWell, not Bruce. You preened Bruceâs little bat ears,â Dick said. He stuck his pointer fingers on either side of his head and wiggled them around. âI think we can say totally now that it was bird flirting.â
Bruce cleared his throat softly, not knowing what to say back to that. It had been, hadnât it?
âAncients, no wounder I wanted to protect you all!â Danny said into his hands. âAnd itâs probably why I felt safe to you! Iâd been at, I guess, Ancient status in the middle of yourâis lair offensive? Is that only a rogue word?â
âDepends on how much Bruce is brooding down here,â Jason said.
âHow how long it has been since Timothy had slept,â Damian agreed.
âBoys,â Bruce sighed and started to push Danny over to the table. Room had already been made for the wheelchair at the table. Bruce took the seat next to Danny, who finally peaked up from out of his hands.
âAnd Jason,â Danny said, voice softer. âYou were wary of me from the start, because you could feel what I was already.â
Jason shrugged, though the motion was a little hunched. âMaybe, I guess.â
âHe kept trying to escape your feathery embrace,â Tim said. âDick just embraced it.â
âSays the one who went to sleep,â Dick said.
Tim stuck his tongue out at Dick. âYeah, well, Damian threatened to stab Danny.â
âA threat I sincerely regret, not that I would have harmed an animal⊠who turned out not to be an animal,â Damian said with a little frown.
âItâs alright, Damian, it had to be a really weird circumstance,â Danny said.
Cass smiled. âWas fun.â
Danny squinted back. âIs that why you found me right away?â
âYes.â
âShe cheated,â Tim grumbled.
âI⊠soâŠ,â Danny looked down at the table, âhow much research did you do on me? How much did you know before you âknewâ?â
âNone,â Bruce said instantly. âWell⊠none after I made the children stop in the limo after the ballet.â
Danny started. âWait, none?â
Jason gestured to Danny. âSee, even the guy in question thinks itâs weird!â
Bruce sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. âLucius looked into Danny before he was promoted to where he is now. And he looked into Danny even further when he was considering bringing Danny in to help with tech for us. He told us not to. I trust Lucius to only say that if he was certain that Danny was no threat.â
âHe wanted me to work on tech for the Bats? So coolâwait, how much does Lucius even know? Bastard, I bet he somehow knows, like, everything,â Danny grumbled an pulled out his phone.
âHow much do you know?â
âHello, Phantom.â
âFuck.â
âFuck.â
âHe knows everything, doesnât he?â Bruce asked. When Danny sighed, Bruce added, âThis is why I trusted his word.â
âThat, and he threatened us if we scared away his best people in R&D,â Tim added.
ââŠthat too,â Bruce agreed. âJason, not unwisely, didnât like that as you grew closer to the family, but⊠to be blunt, I did not want everything I knew about you to be from a report. I wanted to actually get to know you.â
âThe old man has gone soft,â Jason stage whispered to Damian who nodded gravely.
Bruce gave them a fond glare. âI donât know about that. If it hadnât been Lucius who had looked into Danny, things would have been different. And, may I point out, that Danny has been extremely honest with usâand very trusting.â
âCounterpoint,â Tim said and steepled his fingers. âStalking is my love language.â
âLove languages are made up by a controlling misogynistic tradwifer, Timbird,â Jason said.
âTimbird,â Tim mouthed more than said.
Danny just frowned. âSo, when I called you after Tim was⊠when I pressed the panic button and when you said that the Bats had been in contactâŠâ
Bruce glanced away towards the emptiness of the of the Cave where the structure ended. He didnât know how to explain everything that was wrapped up in this secret. Being Batman was⊠almost unexplainable at this point. But he had to at least try and explain some of the why. âI didnât want to have the conversation like that, over the phone. And it wasnât as important at making sure that Tim was safe, or that you were safe. Of course, then as soon as we could have it you collapsedâŠâ
âOh sure, blame the guy in a wheelchair,â Danny teased. He reached out and squeezed Bruceâs hand. âHey, look at me. I get it. I was a hero too. There were times when I had to have this same sort of conversation. I mean, I didnât have a cool lair to have it in or anything, but I get it. I donât blame you for not telling me sooner or for trying to find the right moment now. Thank you, for telling me. Thank you all of you, I know how much trust this is.â
âYeah, well, weâre already trusting you with Hummingbird here,â Jason said, arms crossed, âso this is just like the other side of it.â
âThank you, Jason,â Danny said again, because he understood.
Bruce didnât know how much of it was their first meeting or being liminal or just Danny being who he was, but Danny understood them. It something that Bruce had given up the hope of finding in someone, but there Danny was, caring for Bruceâs family, laughing with them, smiling. He was still there after blood and pain and suffering. He was accepting their other sides like it was nothing.
Danny glanced at Bruce, mid laugh over something that Damian was saying to Tim. He tilted his head, smile still on his lips. âWhat?â
Bruce twisted their fingers together. âJust thinking about how sometimes, when one gives up hope, it has a way of finding them.â
âYeah? Thinking about keeping hope around then?â
âI think I would be a fool not to,â Bruce said and leaned in to press a kiss to Dannyâs lips. In the background the children pretended to be grossed out or catcall, but Bruce ignored them. They would have to get used to it, after all. It was time that the family had some real hope again.
