Birdmen in a Steampunk AU

In which Tsubame is an engineer that specializes in mechanical wings and anything that can fly. She's in a secret relationship with Irene, who is an undercover spy trying to steal her work for a competing company. Irene does catch feelings along the way, because how could she not before such a brilliant and sweet woman.

And then, suddenly, Irene turns around, her back to the nothingness-yet-everything singularity of the donut shaped pile of despair, hurt, hope, love, hatred, fatigue, yearning, loss...

"Nothing matters", she hears herself say to Fiona, in a voice almost foreign to herself.

Irene stares with intent, searches for meaning in her lover's gaze, but she only finds silence and confusion.

If only she could see her. If only she could understand her. If only she could feel her.

This version of Fiona, this failure of every shard of existence, she should've understood. The hurt that comes with not living up to expectations. She should...

Maybe if she stepped closer to the singularity she could? Let herself be engulfed alongside Irene.
