An 18 minute short written and directed by Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia, Rita is a powerful and innovative tale of a blind girl who shelters a boy on the run. Ironically and somewhat beautifully, the boy’s entrapment marks the beginning of Rita’s brief but enjoyed freedom. The film is produced by 3-time Oscar winner Massimo Cristaldi, who was involved with some of Italy’s most finest of films: Fellini’s Amarcord and Tornatore’s Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. It’s hardly surprising the Italian duo had such staple backing: their work is intensely original. Rita has no reverse angle shots. Our vision is restricted to that of Rita’s: we cannot see before her. Like Rita, we too are forced to depend on sounds and noises to evoke our own sights and senses. This not only proves powerful visually, but also enables us to share a poignant intimacy with Rita.
Rita has won awards from over 20 film festivals, while Piazza and Grassadonia’s script, Salvo, is already in production (with Cristaldi once more) after being selected for Script&Pitch, the Berlin Talent Campus and Binger FilmLab. This is definitely a pair to watch.
