Most stars have a certain amount of variability in their output, even our own star, but for those stars where there is a more significant and noticeable dimming event, we call these stars Variable stars.
Variable stars come in many different types, usually named after a star that exhibits that particular phenomena, like Cepheid named after Delta Cephei the first star noticed to be variable in that way.
Red Giants can exhibit different kinds of variability, not just the internal throbbing of the star, but like recently with the great dimming of Betelgeuse, these stars can throw off large amounts of carbon which over time cools and blocks the starlight, eventually dissipating and restoring the stars brightness in our sky.
This kind of variability can be difficult to predict, and unlike the internal workings of a star, don't tend to follow any particular regularity.
So when a large dimming event does, it's very interesting. This is what has been detected around a Red Giant star 26,000 light years from Earth, which appeared to go through a seven year dimming cycle before returning to it's normal magnitude.
Astronomers at the University of Washington don't believe this is being caused directly by the star, but indirectly by a companion star, maybe a white dwarf, that's collected the output from the larger star, and created a fairly dusty accretion disk around it, which occasionally eclipses the star as viewed from Earth.

So... Iāve started work on a webtoon, no clue what the title is, but ya know what that means? (Well yes I know it means I now have a webtoon to promote but aside from that)
Yep. It means that my fav characters Adie and K (from a story that actually has a title [Soular Flare]) and my second favorite characters Elias, Holly, Taylor and Leo (no I totally didnāt forget the last two names and had to look em up in my files) who live in the same universe and ALSO have a named story (Binary Pair) all of which are supposed to become webtoons are NOT getting produced anytime soon.
If you canāt tell Iām a bit (very) grumpy about that.
So, today (21/05/2022) I have made a clear and rational decision with a completely level head (I currently have a fever of 99.9 degrees fahrenheit) to post the writing bits I found in my documents that include said characters here on tumblr, and all of them shall be linked to this post (and also the webtoon in question should be linked at the top once that gets released)
So yeah, have my shitty writing that quite frankly wasnāt supposed to see the light of day when it was written. Feel free to send in asks about terminology I never explained since I was writing for myself or comments about what your liked or didnāt or questions about things in the world/universe. Spoilers be damned I plan to answer everything openly because Iāve had this stupid story cooped up for almost 6 years now so I figure by the time I publish it people will have probably forgotten.

In essence though, this scene happens post... well, everything that happens in the main stories. Everything is at peace, Kās defeated his enemies, but a millennia of conflict has lead to a rather concerning mental state now that heās been left alone.

K shut rapidly shut the book he was reading, the clap echoing around the sparsely filled room of this new, and still unfamiliar home. He took a breath to steady himself, then placed the book down on the table next to his chair, then got up.
He went to the back door of the house and stepped out into its yard. The crisp night air blew some of the hair from his face as he looked out upon the beautiful scene before him. He could see the galaxy above as the yard led up to the edge of the mountain, overlooking the nearby city. It was tranquil, remote, peaceful, stunningly beautiful.
It was... quiet.
He grabbed his arm and dug his fingers in, knowing no one was around, but trying to keep himself composed nonetheless, a bad habit. This is what heād asked for. Somewhere peaceful, somewhere out of the way, somewhere he could... relax. The days here were almost perfect, there was hardly a moment when this cottage home was anything short of picturesque.
Yet somehow, it was so. Damn. Quiet.
He forced himself to sit slowly, naturally, in a way that to any outside observer would seem perfectly normal. The quiet had been great for the first week, hell, the first month was fine, but the more the quiet sank in, the louder the thoughts in his head became. The more unbidden memories played back, echoing moments of the past whose only remaining traces lied in his very mind.
At first doing things had helped. Cooking, cleaning, working. It had worked so well in the past, but now, without a goal to drive him forward, he was lost, and the memories slowly crept back in. Voices of those long since past echoed around him, voicing his own regrets about them right back at him.
Heād hear mother tell him to be cautious of connections, lest they all be used against him.
Heād hear his best friend, Levin, tell him he could have stopped, he didnāt need to reach the top to be happy.
Heād hear his mentor, David, tell him that some things shouldnāt be researched. That some things are better left unknown.
Heād hear his protege, Olivia, tell him that if things were as dangerous as he said, he shouldnāt have shown mercy. He shouldnāt have let them continue.
Heād hear Adie. He... he didnāt even know what they were to him anymore, but heād hear them, a breath away from his ear, always just out of sight, tell him this was all his fault. That heād killed them. That if heād been decisive theyād be alive. That he was the one whoād crafted Adie into what theyād become.
He heard screaming- he couldnāt breathe- he couldnāt-
It didnāt matter if he could or couldnāt. By the time he was breathing normally, by the time he realized he had been the one screaming, it was practically sunrise.
Heād screamed and screamed, and the awful truth of the matter sank into his heart like a knife. No one had come. No one would. They were gone. All of them.
He was the last standing, and at this rate, in this silence, even he didnāt know how long that would last.

Anyway, this is really just a short drabble on Adieās arrival on Terra Tectus + Eliasās reaction as viewed from Hollyās perspective. For context, this happens POST Binary Pairās main story while Elias & K happens PRE Binary Pair, so at this point the relationship between Holly and Elias is dating and the knowledge from Elias & K has been tormenting the poor boy for quite awhile

Everyone stared in awe watching the spaceship far up in the sky, not close enough to be clear during the day, but enough so that everyone could see it was the size of a small city. Every other ship that had arrived on Terra Tectus had been nowhere near that size. Elias stumbled back, straight into Holly who had just caught up behind him.
āHolly.ā His voice was quiet and serious, but she could hear unease in it as well, āThat ship... itās a Terra Prima model.ā
āWhat???ā She turned him around to face her, his face was stoic as ever but... he was ever so slightly biting his lip, āI thought your ship was the last one off Terra Prima before itās destruction!ā
āIt was.ā He looked back up at the ship and so did Holly, the speakers around the spaceport came on with a pop and a hiss, silencing the crowd, all waiting for news on what was happening.
āAhem, is this on, can you all hear me?ā It was an unfamiliar voice, everyone knew who the spaceport controllers were, there were only three of them, and this voice wasnāt one of them. The crowd began to murmur.
āIām sure youāre all wondering whatās going on here, so allow me to explain while we land. Oh and speaking of, please clear the area around the spaceport, in fact you should probably go inside, our vessel is too large to fit inside so weāll be making an outdoor landing so do stay clear.ā Holly noted that whoever this was was used to authority, was it the shipās admiral? Probably. Good thing she and Elias were already inside, she could see people flooding in.
āAlright, now that thatās out of the way, hello Terra Tectus! My name is Adeline Colbum, currently in command of the Starship Sagan-B. We are the final vessel from Terra Prima, we were only able to leave at the last moment which is why we were unable to warn about our approach in advance.ā There was a pause as another voice came on momentarily.
āSir, arenāt you forgetting something?ā There was a kind laugh over the speakers.
āAh, yes I am, thank you Al. Iām not just in charge of this ship, I am the World Lead Scientist.ā
The room was silent for quite some time, then people started clamoring to get a look through the window at the now landing ship, the WLS was more of a myth to most than someone who actually existed, and everyone wanted to get a look at the person in charge of the entire human civilization.
The WLS kept talking but Elias grabbed Hollyās shoulder distracting her, āHolly, we need to get out of here.ā His voice was quiet but urgent as he grabbed her hand leading her against the crowd.
āWhat? Elias, itās fine itās not like weāre going to be trampled or something, and didnāt you hear them? Itās dangerous to be out there during landing!ā She tried to pull back against him, but his grip was firm.
āNo. We need to get as far away from here as possible, Iāve almost figured out a path through the gravitational field around Terra Tectus, we could get a ship and weāll make it off planet-ā
āNo!ā She pulled on him hard as people kept moving around him, seeming to get more excited as the WLS kept talking, āElias what is going on!? You know itās not possible to leave the planet! Even if you solve it, why would I!? My family still lives here!ā
His face looked normal but there was a slight crease in his brow and his grip tightened a little around her wrist, while the other hand seemed to be clenched tight enough to dig into itself, āFine whatever we can take them but we need to go-ā
āElias! Thatās not the problem!ā Holly was getting worked up, āWhy do we need to leave, Iām sure this will be fine, Terra Prima has always respected our culture. I canāt see why this would ever change with the WLS here! Youāve even talked to the WLS and you said you trust them so whatās your problem!?ā
He swallowed, silent for a moment, and she simply waited.
āThatās not the WLS. Thatās The General.ā
Holly wasnāt sure whether to be shocked or incredulous, āWhat? Whoās this general person?ā
āBad. Thatās all you need to know. We really need to get out of here before they take control here, because once they do weāre fucked.ā He gave her another tug, but it was much gentler than before, like a request rather than a command. She noticed he was shaking somewhat. If this general was so bad that he was this nervous... Well, she trusted him.
āAlright. But we need to talk further once weāre out of here.ā She let him lead her and he seemed to relax somewhat.
āAlright. Thank you.ā He pulled her quickly through the now cheering crowd and they managed to get on his hoverbike and away from the landing zone just in time to be outside the danger area. Holly looked at his face, heĀ had a tendency to let things show while on his bike and... he looked like heād just seen the end of the world.
