Yes my English is good or whatever but knowing all the English words is HARD when you rely on speaking more than writing.
I just typed leaves ruffling in a fic and thought hmm that sounds… not right but also not wrong.
I meant to say leaf(s) rustling and thank God for Google because leaves ruffling makes no sense

I then googled plural of leaf and it is leaves
WHAT.

Fun fact I called corkscrew a cockscrew for a long time because they sound the same until I awkwardly got corrected. I won’t be using cockscrew in a fic anytime soon - I think.
Another fun fact I thought a sheep and a lamb are two separate ADULT animals (in my language it is one word, in English there is two, so I thought it’s a new animal I have never heard of) and when I found it out a lamb is a baby it did not go down well.

Being in a bilingual relationship gave me an English accent no one's ever able to pin down, a deep insecurity when using sayings and figures of speech (Is this a real saying? Or did I just translate one literally?) and the superpower of not being able to write in either language without wishing I could switch to the other one mid sentence.
I might have to try and write fanfic in German again. Something short and small, and I don't even know what right now.
But I'm reading through some of my old fic and I feel a strange mixture of cringe and pride. On the one hand I enjoy what I wrote, on the other it feels strangely distant. I mean, I did stop writing in my mother tongue six years ago basically. (at least the fun part, I'm still writing plenty in German for work) switched to writing in English completely. I love writing in English, love reading in English, and to me writing in German and English works and feels very differently. Both languages are different, but also your first and second language are just different.
But I dislike that I feel alienated to my own older writing by now. And I don't think it's the mere fact that it's older writing. But maybe it is? Guess the only way to find out is to write something German again.
