I think the McElroys dedicated the most recent episode to this blog and Iām only 10 minutes in
aĀ minusculeĀ part of me thought they might vague tweet my blog somewhere in the intro and i was ready to scream on my way to work this morning
A saw a rather popular YouTubed say āNot every game is meant to be completed by every playerā in respects to game accessibility, and I wanted to know your thoughts on that sentiment. I personally am in favor of accessibility so it was a bit strange to hear it from someone I trusted. His argument for hard games with no accessibility features was basically that accessibility is in opposition to design integrity. How do you feel about this?
Allow me to preface this post by saying that Iām absolutely in favour of accessibility features in games - and being physically disabled myself, this isnāt a disinterested position on my part! However, I think the matter isnāt as simple as either proponents or detractors of accessibility in gaming often make it out to be, for a couple of big reasons:
1. Thereās no such thing as being accessible in the abstract. Whatās accessible to you may not be accessible to me, or vice versa; everybodyās accessibility needs are unique, and while certainly some features will be helpful to broader or narrower subsets of your target audience, thereās always going to be more that could be done. Unless you have literally unlimited resources to throw at the problem, at some point youāre going to have to confront the question: how accessible is accessible enough?
Some folks will try to twist this around into an argument that since you canāt get it perfect, you shouldnāt even bother to try, and clearly thatās nonsense, but ultimately you will be forced decide where to give up, and there are no easy answers there.
2. What exactly is being made accessible? Suppose, for example, that we have a game that consists of difficult platforming sections interspersed with interactive cutscenes, and we decide to make the platforming sections skippable. Have we made the game more accessible? Yes and no; weāve definitely made the cutscenes more accessible, but the platforming sections remain just as inaccessible as they always were.
This problem extends to alternative challenges as well; if you take a puzzle based on matching musical motifs, and create an alternative version that depends on matching visual patterns for the benefit of hearing-impaired players, for example, you havenāt made the original puzzle accessible. Youāve created a different puzzle that hearing-impaired users can solve instead.
I think that second example highlights the crux of the issue: all interactive media necessarily makes certain baseline assumptions about its audienceās ability to engage with it. If those assumptions prove to be invalid, thereās only so much you can do. You can make the piece of interactivity in question skippable, or you can create a second, different piece of interactivity that people can engage with instead, but if neither of those options are satisfactory, there wonāt always be a good workaround.
Now hereās the kicker: what if your entire game consists of one particular type of interactivity? Making all of its challenges skippable is of limited value to anyone who wanted to play a game and not watch a movie, and the effort required to come up with alternative versions of every challenge may well be tantamount to the effort required to develop a whole second game. Is that a reasonable expectation? Does your answer change if the gameās developer is a one-person indie show rather than a multi-billion-dollar corporation?
In sum, itās probably safe to say that if thereās a simple and straightforward may to make a game more accessible, and the developer declines to pursue it for ideological reasons, that developer is an asshole. Beyond that, youāve really got to take it case by case; for the reasons outlined above and others, thereās no one-size-fits-all answer.
Is it ok to ask you to tag the Christmas Negative posts as #Negativity or something? Iām just trying really hard this season to not fall into a depressive funk but I like following you still. Having a tag to block would make it a non-issue
again
I will not be able to remember, like at all, to do that
Iām not even really being all that super negative right now, Iām just pointing out the origins of Christmas which led to talking about christianityās affect on Pegan culture :/

I love your characters outfits. I love your sense of style. Draw more cool fashion
my fashion in art is like a mix of adidas and japanese street fashion. in person i also dress using saturated colors and blocky color patterns, but nothing as exaggerated as the clothing in my art. i will draw more fashion in fact im doing that rn!
I love the new game plus AU idea. Think he will handle any of the boss fights differently?
aa thank you;;
and some of them? yes. absolutely.
gascoigneās fight would be nothing but trying to remind him of his humanity; no battle, only talk and lots and lots of music box. i think that eventually heāll get back to his good olā self after reminding him that his daughters are still waiting for him
heād try to find a way to avoid fighting both rom and ebrietas. while he sees death as the only solution for many other beast and kin bosses, somehow he wishes to find a way to relief them in another way.especially ebrietas.Ā i know that he didnāt want to hurt her in the first place, he attacked only due lack of any other choice
heād probably straight up ignore logarius, or show heās part of the vileblood covenant to let him understand that he means no harm for the queen
same goes for maria. heād try to talk to her, make her understand he knows whatās up with the nightmare, and the only way to stop it is to get to the coast; iām not quite sure sheād still let him go through her without trying to stop him, but iām certain sheās going to appreciate him giving her the rest she so wished to recieve in the first place.
he wonāt lay a finger on paarl nor the blood starved beast. he doesnāt need the chalices because he has no intention to use them and knows well whatās up with byrgenwerth and the unseen village, so he has no reason to fight them.besides, if thatās what it takes to befriend djura, so be it. heās not touching a single beast in old yharnam.
as for npcs battles, there are some changes as well
heād try to find a way to make brador focus on him and let simon out of the nightmare. i bet listing all the people he killed in the firstĀ āplaythroughā should be enough to make him follow a way more interesting prey
again, heād do anything to avoid killing djura. thatās for sure
for henryk itās a big question mark for me, since i accidentally missed eileenās quest and i donāt really know whatās up with him - but even more, i actually summoned him against rom. itās someone he could trust, and i think that if by any chance they fight heās going to be !!!! and stop eileen for addempting murder.since i think that his eventual fall in beasthood is because of gascoigneās death, having big dad still alive would help a lot the cause
frankly heād try to talk it out with edgar as well, but letās face it. that man is probably too blinded by orders and loyalty he wouldnāt but try to stop the one who could end the nightmare.
BAM youāre in a furry universe like nothing ever changed and you are your sona. You have that job doing something not-horrible and you still have your friends (as their fursonas). How would you handle this on a scale of āAwesome!ā To āChecks self into an asylumā
Iād be initially and excitedly shocked.Ā
Also since most of my friends arenāt furries and donāt have fursonas itād be interesting what the universe decides their sonas are.Ā
Iād put it on anĀ āAwsomeā on the scale.
Iād also have to get used to being a couple hundred pounds heavier than I am now since Salisbury is a much heftier boy than I.Ā
