Big Lou's Pizza.
everything's bigger in Texas. (pizza especially)
preface : one should never consume this much pizza, alone.
You can't not order the biggest pizza Texas has to offer, right?? Well we couldn't not.
Right when you step onto Big Lou's "campus" you start to get a feel for what's in store. The parking lot is organized chaos (you make your own space), the building gives off a "we don't fuck around vibe", right up our alley.Â
We started to get a little scurred (read: scared) because even on man vs food, he needed to share this behemoth of a pizza.
The moment you step inside is when it starts to sink in. The entire place is packed, it's loud, there's a detail there to make sure things stay orderly, it's hot, and the entire place smells like pizza. Â
The way the waiting/ordering process works is you pay before you wait. The standard wait time is about an hour at Big Lou's, and that doesn't even include cook time. We had already discussed that we wanted to get half veggie and half meats so we took the most expensive route (83.99 for all the fixings).Â
The entire ordering process was pretty streamlined, they gave us a pager and told us to relax!Â
Instead of the standard hour, we were seated in under forty-five. Best believe we took advantage of dollar drafts (had to expand our stomachs a little)Â . It was probably about half an hour after, that the biggest pizza we have ever ordered arrived.
By my second slice, I was starting to really feel it. (each slice is as large as a standard 10" pizza) And the entire pie weighed about seventy pounds. We tried our best, but sadly we were defeated. Instead of paying the $5.00 box fee, we just origami'd the leftovers and called it a day.
Here's how Big Lou's stacked up:
wait : 8/10 - considering how big of a pizza we ordered, and how many people were there the wait time/experience wasn't at all bad. We were told a longer wait time, so there's no surprise that we were excited when our buzzer buzzed almost half an hour earlier than expected!
taste: Â 7/10 - let's face it, you're coming here for the novelty not the taste.
dough : 7.5/10 - not bad for the size, but it needed to be crispier.
sauce to topping ratio : 8.5/10 - pretty spot on, but there were FAR too many olives. I get it, we said veggies, but one should never have 8 olives (slices) in a two bite span.
size: Â 42/10 - FORTY TWO INCHES PEOPLE.
service: Â 7/10 - our waiter was kind of all over the place. We had to flag him down numerous times just to get the basics (utensils, water etc.), granted this is an extremely busy place but still!
** side note: BRING FRIENDS or make them before you order this thang **
keep it appetizing.
Lunch Report: Big Lou's...
You know about Big Lou's Pizza on W.W. White in San Antonio because you watch Man Vs. Food. They serve a huge, and I mean HUGE pizza that serves everyone at the table.Â
They have a guy bring this thing out lifted above his head, and a second server has to make sure the entire table is cleared of glasses and plates and such, just so they can lay it down.
On my visit today, I asked the people at a table near me if I could take a picture of the huge pie that had just been presented, and they were still in shock giving me a semi-conscious approval to point my phone at their feast. You need to understand what you are looking at in the picture above. That is a full size table that seats 6 to 8 people, and that pizza is touching the edges from side to side.
At my table,a co-worker ordered a 10 inch pizza with everything they offer minus anchovies. I've had a pizza in my day, and when I was offered a piece just to test things out, I have to tell you this was a serious winner. I ordered with a few other guys and we got a 16 inch sausage and pepperoni. Sorry, no picture. It took over 35 minutes to get it to our table and before I could snap a picture, there were several pieces gone. I will say that it was a damn fine pizza - better than most in fact, but the slice I had from the 10 inch pizza with everything was so incredibly good that I had lost interest. The guy sitting next to me ordered a Calzone that was just huge and fantastic looking. I must return for one of those. A guy sitting a few chairs down ordered some spaghetti and it was both huge and good looking. In short, Big Lou's offers a lot of big food and the good news is, from what I could tell, it was all good! Eva and I plan to go back soon so we can take better pictures and eat more awesome pizza.
My buddy is gonna take me to Big Lou's in San Antonio
he promised
and you're all witnesses
so he can't back down
:P
