yes he is!!! so death note actually helps us understand his past before he started making theories and stuff... he used to be one of 3 super genius kids raised in this british orphanage and he was lined up to be the successor of the autistic detective guy who always had his feet out.

the two other smart kids sort of battled for dominance and in the meantime matt started to fall in love with gaming and he got a nintendo ds and was playing mario kart and all that. eventually one of the three kids (mello) ran away from the orphanage (called wammy's) because he wanted to prove himself and stuff and also the detective (his name is L) was dead.

eventually matt met up with mello again later on but mello had killed somebody in the mafia and was a mob boss and they definitely had some sort of situationship going on with a sprinkle of catholic guilt from mello. anyway there was this whole thing where mello wanted to kidnap a guy and matt volunteered to drive a car and he ended up getting surrounded by the police who aimed guns at him but he was pretty sure they wouldn't shoot him so he said that. then they shot him.

it's okay though because as we can see matt found a passion for making game theories after his speedy recovery and was able to give the pope deltarune so i am so happy for his success.
