Wearing just his pyjamas, young Urban Grimshaw escapes the harsh reality of council care and sets out in search of the family and home he’s never known. Starring Richard Armitage and Anna Friel with Neil Morrissey and Charlie Heaton and introducing Fraser Kelly as Urban Grimshaw.

I was going to write a detailed piece but I don’t think too many people have seen this film as yet, so I’ll hold off on spoilers. The rental fee is fully worth the value for a film story of raw honesty, tragedy, heartwarming bonds, and the self-salvation of human beings. It’s uneven in places, and some things are left unclear, yet the performances of all the actors, especially the kids, is phenomenally well done and I was sorry that the film wasn’t longer to cover more detail of the lives depicted. Mentioning again, this IS a regional UK film & the accents are quite genuine! Use the subtitles if needed. Even I was hard pressed a few times to understand the dialogue & I spent some childhood in Sheffield! I also think the accompanying film score & music to be interesting choices, with mains by Som Vinter. I think this is one of Richard’s best roles, his portrayal of Chop is as passionate & compassionate as I expected. Anna Friel, currently nominated (deserving of winning) a BAFTA for her work in a similar role in the Liverpool TV drama BROKEN, is excellent as always, and I was hugely impressed with Fraser Kelly’s debut. Charlie Heaton, another great young actor, we’ve already seen him go on to a hugely popular TV series in STRANGER THINGS!

Urban and the Shed Crew to Premiere at Newcastle International Film Festival

Based on Bernard Hare’s memoir Urban Grimshaw and the Shed Crew, the film adaptation Urban and the Shed Crew, directed by Candida Brady and starring Richard Armitage, Anna Friel, with Fraser Kelly as Urban, will screen at the Newcastle Film Festival Saturday, March 31, at 7 PM.
