OUTLANDER (2026) 10 810 Cross Stitch

In the Limbo between life and death that Claire created with her La Dame Blanche power, Jamie suddenly got the chance to be a ghost.

Upon discovering he could time travel in this form, he decided he wanted to see Claire before she went to the stones like The Woman of Balnain. In the town of Inverness on All Hallow's Eve in 1946, he could see her in the window of the inn. Jamie smiled, because Claire looked as beautiful as she ever did. It was a privilege to see her like this. However, he never expected himself to be seen, let alone confronted by Frank, and that rattled him even as a spirit.

His thoughts next took him to the ancient circle of standing stones of Craigh na Dun. In this form, he could hear the buzzing as described by his family. There was a gemstone in his brooch. He could hear all of his time traveling clan in the buzzing, and in that moment he knew his granddaughter Frances had the ability. Dare he touch one? Doing so connected him to Claire even more. There were things you could kent with your soul that you could not with your body or mind.

Claire had said she had gone to look for blue flowers. Blue, the rarest colour in nature. As he withdrew his hand from the stone and walked away, fading back into Limbo, he caused some forget-me-nots to grow at the base, knowing Claire would touch it and come back to him.

He relived his life with Claire. His Sassenach.

A Stitch in Time may save Nine.

The fabric would be mended.

Jamie heard Claire suck in a breath.

More than a month later I'm still thinking about the TV finale so before I post the last 810 story segment, here are the remainder of the official Jamie photos, a final BTS video from STARZ, and The Paley Center celebration.

Yes, I am deeply mourning the end of seeing Sam play Jamie Fraser. It’s terrible he never received any award recognition for his tremendous performance.

I don't know how I'm going to emotionally manage to read Diana's final book, but obviously, I will. I think she'll do a more satisfying job of wrapping the story since words on a page are limitless and inexpensive.

I think I’ll still have more to say about Series 8 and the finale. There’s also Lord John Grey to address.

OUTLANDER (2026) 09 810 An Echo in the Bone

Under an unforgiving pearl grey sky British Major Patrick Ferguson, in a final act of defiance, shot him with a hidden pistol. Jamie dropped his sword in shock and stared at him, then at Ian Og who was looking at him with the same shock he felt. The shot vibrated his body as he fell to his knees. He could feel the lifeblood ebbing from the shot hole, and could not do a damn thing to stop it from coming out there or his mouth.

He thought he saw Buck and Josiah in front of him; he fell onto rock; he heard multiple answering shots killing the blackguard redcoat absolutely dead.

"Ahh, dinnae fash," he faintly told Claire when she frantically got there and saw the damage. "I'm not afraid." He felt her lift him up in her arms. It was only where he ever wanted to be since that night on the road in Scotland. He'd been injured then, too.

"Forgive me… Sassenach," he said weakly, looking up at her in the same way he did all those years ago, time echoing in their hearts and bones. He felt her anguish, saw and heard her begging him not to go but he did not know how to stop it, closed his eyes so he could better see The Way…

OUTLANDER (2026) 08 810 A Breath of Snow and Ashes

As Jamie fought his way up Kings Mountain, all he could hear was screaming, gunshots, and Ferguson's damn whistle. Fraser's Ridge men followed closely, and he looked around for the British Major on a white horse as they forced through their line. The whistle made it easy to find him and once within range, Jamie aimed a pistol at the Major but was forced to fire elsewhere, saving Buck. There was still a lot of skirmishing and Jamie ran towards the last place he saw Ferguson. As he warily approached the mountain top, it looked like the fighting was over, with the rebels winning the day just as Frank had written. Jamie, however, was still standing, and then he saw Claire coming towards him. Was it really over?

Just as he was about to walk towards her, a British rider came fast out of the smoke. Jamie turned at the same time Claire screamed and met the charge square with his sword, slicing through and unseating the soldier, who turned out to be Major Ferguson, whom the rebels dragged away. Jamie was unscathed and called to Claire, who didn't seem to believe it, but he was.

"It's over! Sassenach." She came running to him and they joyfully embraced with relief. Was it really over? In that moment, Claire declared Frank was wrong and Jamie was never happier about that. The field was theirs. Amidst the death and destruction of battle, they kissed.

Though jubilant, there were still injured and wounded men that Doctor Fraser needed to tend. Jamie kissed her hand, still hardly believing it was over, and let her go. He had some words for Patrick Ferguson.

The celebration on top of the mountain was loud and boisterous. The cool, crisp air under a gray sky had the clean scent of snow coming, dispersing the smoke and ash of fire. Jamie gladly saw his kin and friends unharmed. "Victory is ours!" he shouted to the men, who cheered in return. Only one thing remained: formal British surrender. He saw Ferguson on the ground by a rock, walked over, pointed his sword, and demanded it of him.

"I will never surrender," he growled, suddenly pulling out a hidden pistol and shooting Jamie point blank in the heart.

OUTLANDER (2026) 07 810 Drums of Autumn

Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780

As per usual, the day dawned. Jamie handed Roger Mac a cross so no one would shoot him, from the front anyway. Both he and Claire needed to stay at camp and come in after, when folk would need them. Jamie looked around at the men once again, nodded to Ian Og in his Mohawk war paint, took his rifle, and led them out.

Jamie had one more speech to give to the freedom fighters of Fraser's Ridge: We've come a long way, lads, and we've a wee bit further to go. As we stand on the brink of battle, let us be thankful for the breath still in our bodies. For the strength still in our bones. For the courage we will find within us. Let our hearts be ablaze, never with fury or fear or hatred, but the desire to fight and fight well. Not for gold or glory, but for our families. And for freedom.

In conclusion, he asked Minister Roger Mac to bless them. Jamie crossed himself in the Catholic manner, and sent the men off.

"Look after her, Roger Mac," he asked, standing beside Claire. "Pray for me." He turned to her. "Tha gradh agam ort, mo chridhe." I love you, my heart. She answered the same, in mangled Gaidhlig but his heart swelled all the more at hearing his native tongue from her lips. He kissed her once more, put on his hat, and formally bowed to her before heading off.

The battle itself went surprisingly much like The Book described, right down to Ferguson's damnable whistle, calling his men like dogs. Jamie didn't have as fine an education as Claire or Frank, but over the course of his life, he well learned things never taught in a school, like effective warfare. That knowledge was saving many lives today, as were Brianna's modified rifles. They went steadily firing up the mountain until Jamie drew his sword and ordered a charge. The two sides clashed. He'd spent his whole life doing exactly this: fighting Redcoats. He wasn't about to be beaten now.

OUTLANDER (2026) 06 810 Voyager

When Jamie rounded a tent corner, he saw Claire standing by the gurgling creek. The endlessly rushing waters reminded Jamie how far he had gone for Claire, for his family and friends, the voyages he had endured.

"Can you forgive me? Am I betraying ye, by coming here?" "Only if you die."

Jamie told Claire what he had learned from Mandy, who could hear animals and other travelers, that wee Davy might not be able to stone travel since his colour was water, like Jamie's, and not like the rest of her family. He would verra much like to see them again.

He'd written his Will, but not this part. Jamie grasped Claire's hand. "If I die tomorrow, I'll ask three things of ye, a nighean. Three things I want. Will ye give them to me?" "If it's within my power, you know I will," Claire replied, looking worrit. "Aye, I do."

"When ye can, find a priest and have a Mass said for my soul." "Done. Though it may take some time." "I'll grin and abide my time in Purgatory til ye manage. I've been there before; it's no sae bad." She looked at him as if trying to decide if he was joking. He was not.

Second thing? He told Claire, if he was dead, take everyone who can and go back to your own time. Claire said she could not promise this. Her home was here now. She would want to be able to feel him all around her even if he were gone. If wee Davy couldn't travel, Claire said Bree would never leave him behind, not even with Ian and Rachel. "I love you with all my heart, and I can't keep you safe," Claire said.

Third thing? "Remember me."

Jamie kissed Claire and that turned into making love like they were sailing towards the end of the world.

OUTLANDER (2026) 05 810 A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out

The last thing Jamie did before leaving his Fraser's Ridge home was speak with Claire's bees. It was a blessing to finally do so. He thought he said what he needed. Resolved, he put on his hat, walked to his horse, and rode with Claire and his men off the Ridge towards Kings Mountain. As they passed the church that served as the Masons Lodge meeting house, he saluted the flag of the new nation that proudly flew over the door. An American nation.

At the crossroad, Jamie's war party joined the larger one led by Benjamin Cleveland. Their combined companies would meet up with other groups staged at the foot of Kings Mountain. According to Claire's knowledge of history, this was the last major back country battle before the British surrender. Jamie intended for history to run true. Claire just wanted to go home. "I'm not afraid of dying," he told her. "I'm afraid of not seeing my home again." "We will see the Ridge again," Claire responded with a small smile. Jamie nodded in agreement and turned his attention back to the task at hand.

Nine times, the auld fortuneteller woman in Paris had told him many years ago. He would die nine times before his death. So far, he'd been able to make every fight count. This one would be no different. He told Ian to settle the men and went to speak with Cleveland, who said the British were on the high ground. From Frank's book Jamie had had a chance to change that but chose not to because he believed in Claire's history. Had he known, Cleveland would've called him a damned fool for not taking the advantage. But he didn't, and believed the British were in a rat trap at the top, they could just pick them off since numbers were roughly equal. He looked around at the men. Some of them would die. It was harsh thinking but he intended on only changing that one book fact about himself, if he could. His small, insignificant life, as Claire had called it.

OUTLANDER (2026) 04 810 Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone

The last time Jamie had a serious conversation with Brianna, he told her what her father had written in The Book, and she had begged him not to go to Kings Mountain. Just stay home, she'd said. He saw her on the porch when he came down that morning, gave her back The Book. "I leave it and the Ridge in your hands, lass." She hoped it was of help. "Frank gave me a gift even greater than his book. He raised you, helped make you who you are" Jamie simply told her. "No matter how the story ends, it will all have been worth it." He smiled at her and told Bree how much she looked like her mother. Not in appearance, but in mannerisms.

"Ye look like yer mother in love. Exactly like her." "I love you, Da," she said tearfully. "And I, you."

Since he wasn't sure if he'd be back later, or ever, after watching Claire with them and all she had said, Jamie decided it was time for him to formally address the bees at their hives.

"Good day to you. I'd talk to ye about the weather and the like, but everyone will be waiting for me. So, I wanted to ask you, if she comes to you, tells you I'm gone, ye'll feed her? Take heed for her? I trust ye wi' her."

That sounded pretty good. But there was one more thing.

"I, uh, remember a bit more of that poem now."

And I shall have some peace For peace comes Dropping slow.

With that, Jamie put on his hat and went to join the war party.

OUTLANDER (2026) 03 810 Dragonfly in Amber

The morning of the Kings Mountain Battle, Claire did not want to leave the bed. When she sighed and said, "Here we are…" his mind unexpectedly jumped to a sentence in the final part of another book Brianna had given him, a fiction he'd read, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Here we are, at the end of all things. But they could pretend this was like any other morning, watching the sun rise. "Life on the Ridge will go on without us," Claire said, and it was the truth. They could hold this moment in time, like the wedding gift Claire once received from Hugh Munro, an insect suspended in a block of resinous amber. She was also telling the bees a lot of things he wanted to hear, but he would rather be in the here and now with his wife. Claire told him what the bees had been doing. Two bees were holding each other's feet while sleeping in a flower. He agreed it was sweet. It reminded him of a poem bit by William Butler Yeats:

Nine bean rows will I have there And a hive for the honey-bee And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

Isn't that what Claire wanted? A quiet country life with bees? Not alone, she said, and kissed him. "I don't think the quiet life was ever meant for us."

Jamie thought about the many times he'd been a madman where Claire was concerned. "I've lived longer than I thought I would. I have lived to see my grandchildren," he smiled, because they brought him great joy. "Not a blessing everyone receives." He so wanted to meet William's eventual wife and see his children. Perhaps Bree would have more bairns. He thought Heaven should allow him to know how his family is getting on, that God would let him have a wee look in.

"Being a ghost, may be quite interesting." He would love to haunt a few folk. A wee glance at Claire, because he wouldn't want to frighten her. Claire wondered about her parents, who she lost at an early age and never had a proper home because she traveled so much with her uncle Lam. She said she'd never lived long enough in one place to even have owned a common household vase. She'd seen one when she arrived in Scotland for the first time, but didn't buy it because the next morning she went to Craigh na Dun looking for forget-me-not flowers.

Jamie asked if Claire regretted finding the flowers and touching the stone. "Never. I have everything I never knew I wanted."

The rest was their history.

The only thing Jamie still wanted was to sleep in a flower while holding Claire's feet, he joked.

OUTLANDER (2026) 02 810 Written In My Own Heart's Blood Fraser's Ridge September 22, Anno Domini 1780

I, James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser, being of sound Mind, do hereby declare this is my Last Will and Testament.

Jamie wondered if saying he was sound of mind was a lie, yet he could not write anything else and be taken seriously. He wrote that all Property and Goods of which I die possessed were to be left to his wife, Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp Fraser… minus the "Randall." Damned if he'd put HIS name in here.

Outside of Claire, he bequested various other things and sums of money:

To My Daughter, Brianna Ellen Fraser MacKenzie, I leave two thousand Acres of Land from the land Grant known as Fraser's Ridge.

To My Grandchildren, Jeremiah, Amanda, David, Germain, Joan, Felicite, Henri-Christian, and Frances, I leave each the Sum of one hundred pounds. I also leave my Books, to be divided among them under the supervision of Roger MacKenzie.

To My Beloved Sister, Janet Flora Arabella Fraser Murray, I leave our Mother's silver stag brooch.

To My Dear Nephew, Ian James Fitzgibbons Fraser Murray, who has been like a Son to me, I leave my tools and my weapons.

Jamie twinged again with deep grief for his son Fergus as he wrote, To Marsali Jane MacKimmie Fraser, I leave my fine quills, ink, and stationery.

Jamie paused after for a bit, then wrote, To my Son, my Natural Son, William James Fraser, also known as William Clarence Henry George Ransom, Ninth Earl of Ellesmere, three casks of my special whisky marked with JFS, and my Bible. May he find Succor and Wisdom in its Pages.

He sealed the Will with stamped wax to make it official.

Jamie hated writing the damned thing, but he didn't dare go to Kings Mountain without making disposition of his property. He couldn't risk it, in case what Frank wrote was true.

OUTLANDER (2026) 01 810 The Fiery Cross

For the last time, Jamie lit a fiery cross to summon the clans of Frasers Ridge to battle. A newly sewn flag for an independent America hung over the door of the Masons Lodge.

Solemnly, silently, the assembled men watched it burn before answering the call.

“Je suis prest,” said The Fraser, quietly. I am ready.

“TÙLACH ÀRD!” shouted The MacKenzies. High hill!

“Air adhart le sealbh agus lìon an làngaid!” shouted The Murray for Fraser. Forward with good fortune, fill the laggard!

“Fulaing le treuntachd!” shouted another man, for Fraser of Lovat. Endure with bravery!

“Aut pax aut bellum!” shouted The Gunns Either peace or war!

Drawing his sword, James Fraser shouted Lovat's "Caisteal Dhùnaidh!" For Castle Downie!

The Scottish men answered it, "Sluagh-ghairm!" Battle cry of the dead!

And they continued shouting with Jamie, his sword held high. It wasn't just his own life. Some of these men were going to die.

OUTLANDER (2026) 04 809 Fight

All Jamie knew how to do to protect his family, was to fight.

It pained him to do so, but it was time again to leave William with John and return to his fate on Frasers Ridge. This time, he could look back at William with confidence that everything would be well with his son. He also saw John's smile.

Back at the Ridge, they returned in time for Brianna's birthing a healthy baby boy, David. Another lovely grandson. What kind of future would this wee man have? He told Brianna about Frank's book prediction and she had her opinions. Yet this would be the battle to end the war, if Frank was right. He had to go. If the rebels won, the Ridge and everyone there would be safe. Brianna pleaded with him not to go, but he believed Frank wrote what he did because they had something in common: to protect her and all the children.

Later, Jamie found Claire hiding in the bedroom, writing in a journal. He first thought it was her medical but when she was hesitant about him seeing it, appeared to be something else. He supposed she was going to write a book. It was a hell of a beginning, if the opening words were any indication. Claire said she was writing their story.

People disappear all the time…

Their peaceful interlude was rudely interrupted by Cleveland outside, shouting for Jamie. The final battle was about to begin.

OUTLANDER (2026) 03 809 Forgiveness

After watching Claire, John, and William in the boat and on the way back to Savannah, Jamie decided to forgive Lord John Grey for laying with his wife. John had kept on staring at him since his rescue, and Jamie thought that was what John was waiting for him to do, after thanking them for coming after him. "For the sake of our history, I couldnae let you die at the hands of that bastard. And I have to say that… I do forgive you. We need never speak of it again," Jamie told him. To Jamie's surprise, Claire turned away as if in disgust and John immediately shifted to being angry. "While I thank you for today's good deed, I do not forgive you! I do not forgive your pigheaded treatment of me for the past two years!" and he stormed off. Claire looked at him. "Pride cometh before a fall." Jamie was perplexed and suddenly angry himself. "Didnae quote the Bible at me, Claire."

"Look at me," Claire said, and he did. "Tell me you don't love that man, and I'll never say his name again." In his own way, yes, he did love John, for William, for his friendship, for his steadfast support. "Damn it, woman," he muttered, handing her his coat, and entered unannounced the drawing room where John was having a drink.

"I ken it's a Fraser family trait to be stubborn as a mule," Jamie offered as an opening and cover for his emotions. "My grandsire was said to have never apologised once in his life." Apparently, John knew that. Jamie got right to the point about John and Claire in bed together. He wanted to hear what went on from John's own lips. John said it was true, their union was about Jamie and nothing else. And Jamie had nearly beat John to death for it. Yes, Jamie had wronged John and he was rightfully angry about it. It was time to properly admit his failure and try to make amends. "I am sorry," he softly told John. He had seen the love between William and John and would forever be grateful for it. "You made William the man he is. What more can I do? Tell me." John looked at him. "My honour must be restored," he said mildly, rolling up his sleeves. Very well, Jamie would allow John to beat him as much as he needed. But instead, John directed Jamie to the chess board, back to where their friendship began at Ardsmuir.

OUTLANDER (2026) 02 809 Rescue

Jamie was not fond of boats, and they were not fond of him. He'd mostly outgrown his younger self's severe sea sickness but could never escape the twinge. That he was willing to go in a small boat without hesitation to rescue John said more about their relationship than any words. By her face Claire also remembered how he was with boats, but she didnae say a word as they clambered onto shore. They went carefully, knowing there must've been men guarding. Claire stopped and pulled out a spyglass to survey the boathouse Jamie spotted. She saw someone; William asked for the glass and when he looked, he said it was Richardson. He looked alone and was going fishing. Jamie knew this was their chance. He thought it would be safe for Claire to keep watch on Richardson while he and William went to get John.

Although he detested boats, Jamie didn't mind swimming and William did not seem to have difficulty. They silently came out of the water like selkies, taking the two guards completely by surprise. Wary about more, Jamie located a door and burst in, finding a bearded John leaping up in surprise. "You look good with a beard, John," he said dryly whilst dripping water. "You're no oil painting yourself," John retorted, staring at him. A heartbeat later William rushed in, going over to John and returning his ring. They embraced and Jamie was glad to see it. Jamie and William put dry clothes on and was leading John out of the boathouse when the door burst open by Richardson… a second later revealing Claire holding a pistol on him! Jamie put John's former irons on him and said they would take him to be court martialed as a traitor to both British and Continental sides of the war. John did not look happy about that plan. Jamie knew that dangerous look upon John's face and yet still handed him a pistol, asked him to search outside whilst Jamie retrieved the boat. He gave Claire a significant look and put the key on the table before leaving.

When Jamie returned, he was not surprised to find John had shot Richardson dead for trying to escape.

OUTLANDER (2026) 01 809 Missing

While at Frasers Ridge, William received a message from Amaranthus Grey, his cousin's wife, saying Lord John was missing, she hadn't seen him in weeks. Jamie and Claire immediately decided to go with William to Savannah, see what could be done to find him. They arrived in record time, working right away to seek clues. Amaranthus said she had made inquiries of all obvious parties, bringing a newly arrived packet to their attention. She said the man who left it and other man inquiring after John wouldn't speak with her. After she excused herself to tend her baby, William opened the packet at Jamie's behest. It contained a threatening letter and some very damning documents about John's personal business. They were outraged someone would dare. Jamie told William nothing would become public knowledge if they got to John first. Whoever had him intended to keep him until his brother the Duke of Pardloe arrived. His kidnapping appeared to be to compel the Duke to change his opinion of the War. Claire noticed the signature "P. Wainwright" whom Jamie remembered being John's associate. They were going to pay the solicitor an abrupt visit.

William didn't waste any words on the man, and Jamie helped Percy Beauchamp understand that they wanted to know where John was, immediately, or there would be grave consequences. Clearly a coward, Percy said he didn't know, but upon further physical urgency gave up the name of Richardson, whom he called a madman. Captain Ezekiel Richardson, from Philadelphia. They all knew who this was. Furthermore, John had given Percy his ring for William, who took it in shock. "I've never once seen it off his hand." Jamie asked to examine it. Scratched on the inside surface was a word: PHAROS. Because they were educated, all three of them recognised the Greek word for lighthouse. Momentarily stumped, Jamie wondered where was there a lighthouse near Savannah amongst hundreds of estuaries? William knew of one, at Tybee Island. They would have to go by boat. Shaking with fright, Percy warned again about Richardson's turn against the American fight. He insisted John was still alive.

I will be fully blogging episodes 809 & 810, to make a complete record here of Jamie's tremendous TV story.

I thought I was ready to write my opinion of the TV finale. Not yet. Perhaps in another week.

I do mostly love the overall TV adaption of 8 Series, mainly because of the cast, wonderful music, locations, cinematography, but especially because of Sam. His consistent & excellent 12 year performance as Jamie is right up there with the best of other iconic character portrayals in screen history.

It is the ending the TV people wanted, but it's not my ending. I will be going to Diana Gabaldon's final book for that. Back to where I started.

OUTLANDER (2026) 07 808 Father

The very next morning Jamie gladly took William up on his offer to go hunting with him. He did not know how to turn away the conversation from upsetting subjects; he just wanted to spend time with his son. A fine buck made his appearance known and Jamie was ready for him. He took care aim with the rifle and dropped him with a single shot. Grinning, he clasped William's shoulder, who seemed as delighted as he. As always, Jamie said a gralloch prayer in Gaelic, giving thanks for the bounty. When he finished, he looked back at William, who was pacing. Clearly there was something he wanted to say. "You alright, lad? Expect me to dress the creature?" William said he wanted to apologise for what he said at the river. Jamie looked at him as he slung his coat and fetched his field kit, then brushed it off. But William was earnest, detailing why he had been wrong. "Would you accept my apology?" Jamie sincerely smiled at William. "Gladly. We need never speak of it again." He knelt by the buck and prepared to get on with the business, but William wasn't finished. He started talking about Helwater, his boyish hero worship of "Mac the groom," how hurt he was when Jamie had just ridden away without a backward glance. "I am your son. I loved you. How could you leave me?"

Swallowing tears, Jamie told William he loved him too, but he had nothing to give a young boy except sorrow; he had been a Jacobite, a traitor, hated, no name, no money, naught but a life of pain. John was able to give him all that he couldn't. And yet, despite all that, if Jamie had looked back at Willie as he rode away, the sight of his face would have shattered his resolve. "And I have regretted it for years. I saw the man you'd become when you came with John. I ken the pain it caused you in the manner it was revealed. I'm deeply sorry for it. I hope you can forgive me."

William looked at him with tears in his eyes, stepped towards Jamie, who braced himself for a blow… and was instead engulfed by a bear hug. After so many missed years, Jamie held his son tightly in his arms and let him weep to release his pain. He silently thanked God for answering his prayers with this blessing.

William joined the Fraser family for Roger Mac's ordination ceremony.
