The Berbie Palace was another nice place to visit here in Albi. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listing of the Episcopal City of Albi. Actually, most of this area in the center of town is very historical and a lot of it has been well preserved. The Berbie Palace gave me a good idea of the area and I found out that it was actually build beside the river. It was still elevated so you can a good view of the river. From there, I noticed that there seemed to be an old bridge which crosses the River Tarn.

The Berbie Palace in Albi is an excellent addition to the episcopal city UNESCO World Heritage site listing. The palace is one of the oldest and best preserved castles in France. The red brick no doubt help with the strength of the structure. I was surprised that it is actually older than the Palais de Papes in Avignon which I thought was significantly older. Turns out this was all built in the 13th century. As I was exploring the Berbie Palace, I realized how the bishop managed to find a good location for his church/palace. Most of the time fortresses would have been built in higher ground. For whatever reason, this was not the case for the cathedral and palace. Instead, it was built by the river.

I managed to find my way in the Berbie Palace or the Bishop's palace. This was another building which was attached to the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia in Albi. I didn't know it existed until I actually passed by the structure. I was lucky to have done so else I would have missed out on another heritage site. The Berbie Palace was an interesting place to visit. I wasn't able to go inside the actual palace itself. It might have been closed for a public holiday. Because of this, I was only on the palace grounds, fortunately, one of the more important places in the palace is out in the open.

Back in the day, bishops would be behaving more like kings where the ruled over people and even commanded armies. Those days are long gone but there are still evidence of these times left behind. The Berbie Palace is the palace of the bishop and it certainly looks like one. Just as the cathedral of Saint Cecilia looks much like a fortress. The bishop's palace also looks a lot like its neighboring fortress. There is no point to make the palace less secure than the cathedral so the bishops palace was similarly well fortified.
