Climbing out of Minturn by Mike Danneman Via Flickr: An eastbound Southern Pacific freight climbs the steep three-percent grade up Tennessee Pass between the old location of Rex near Minturn and Belden, Colorado, on August 3, 1996. Leading the train is SP EMD SD45r No. 7486 along with three other EMDs, and in the shadows, helping out 29 cars from the head end is a set of four SP GE AC4400CWs from the Minturn helper pool.

This fire map of the Dixie Fire in between the Middle Fork of the Feather River and Highway 36 shows the PCT (the dotted line through the middle of the image and, unfortunately, the fire). For those of you who have walked this stretch, you know that it includes the steep descent into Belden and the long, long climb going north. The midpoint cairn is placed near the northern boundary of the fire.
It is for good reason that the PCT is closed.
Up high on the south side of the North Fork of the Feather River will burn the vegetation quickly. The trees start a little lower.
The climb north out of Belden . . . the Dixie Fire wouldn’t be its first fire.
