Dylan OāBrien Latest To Join Appleās āBeing Heumannā
EXCLUSIVE: Dylan OāBrien (upcoming Twinless) is set to star alongside Ruth Madeley and Mark Ruffalo in Being Heumann, Appleās adaptation of the bestselling memoir from disability activist Judy Heumann.
In the film from CODA Oscar winner SiĆ¢n Heder, OāBrien will play Evan White, one of the few reporters covering the San Francisco disability rights protests at the heart of the story. Madeley plays the title role, as previously announced, with Ruffalo playing Joseph Califano, the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare under President Jimmy Carter, who was initially reluctant to sign off on civil rights legislation affecting the disabled community.
Being Heumann follows Heumann as she leads over a hundred disabled people to take over the San Francisco Federal Building, kicking off a 28-day sit-in in 1977. The protestors quickly form a tightly bound community, refusing to leave until the government enforces section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which required all federal spaces to become accessible.
things ive learned reading being heumann: during the 25-day sit-in to pass section 504 (a precursor to the americans with disabilities act that prevented discrimination on the basis of disability) the disability activists received a lot of support from other activist groups like gay activists, the black panthers, and even labor union members.
so basically. solidarity forever.
- Being Heumann by Judy Heumann
This International Womenās Day , remember the intersections of disability and gender.
Remember how these identities intersect with race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.
Remember disabled women.
ALL disabled women.

ID: But we were not in charge. People called me pushy. People never called Ed pushy. This affected me. Of course my women friends in California were on me about it. But I was always walking a tightrope. And I had to grow, internally, as we all do. As disabled women, we didn't have help from the women's movement. We were always pushing to have our issues considered and supported by the women's movement, but we were largely ignored. We were basically on our own.
EXCLUSIVE: Apple Original Films has landed rights to a package based on Judy Heumannās bestselling memoir Being Heumann. SiĆ¢n Heder, whom Apple signed to a multi-year overall deal in the wake of wiā¦
SiĆ¢n Heder is adapting the film to direct. Ali Stroker, the first actress who uses a wheelchair for mobility to appear on Broadway and the first to win a Tony for her work in Oklahoma, is being eyed to star.Ā
Being Heumann is based on the memoir from Judy Heumann. From the time she contracted polio in 1949 in Brooklyn which confined her to a wheelchair, and was deemed a fire hazard at age 5 and told to stay home, Heumann has been a crusader for the rights of the disabled.
