Of all the pre-Roman peoples in Iberia only the Aquitanians, today known as the Basque, have managed to retain their own identity, culture and language. Appreciation post | An Apartment in Rome, most likely built in the 17th Century.... But before tackling the interior choices seen here , let’s just think about what it’s like to be in a place that’s an official ancient city, and was first built up in the time known as BC. Imagine the different lives that have lived here, their experiences and what it took to survive those times. I ain’t no Historian, but it not hard to imagine life was hard, and to see these buildings still standing today, is testament to how innovative and resilient people had to be back then. The interior is pretty 2021 but with a little flair that’s so European. Similar to the textures we see in the newer builds in Los Angeles. Wood, Gold accented lighting figments, exposed hardwood vaulted ceilings ... The wealth and social level of the owner are immediately evident from the street: the pavement bears the Latin welcome inscription (HAVE); the majestic door is framed with pillars with decorated capitals and the entrance floor is inlaid with multi-coloured yellow, green, red and pink marble triangles. Both sides of the top part of the walls are adorned with small temples in relief where the lararium of the house is recognised. The house has two atriums and two peristylia around which there are other rooms: some exceptionally decorated reception rooms, others reserved for family use and others for service. At the centre of the impluvium of the main atrium there is a copy of the famous statue of the dancing satyr or Faun.
