Bebe Buell was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024; her new song 'Skin Suit' is her warrior's anthem.
Bebe Buell, a Grand Dame of Rock, Stares Down Cancer in Empowering Song āSkin Suitā
The singer and Seventies fashion model was diagnosed with breast cancer last year
July 14, 2025
Bebe Buell turns 72 today, and the rock & roll grand dame has never been more vital. Or more appreciative of her time on this planet.
Last summer, the singer, songwriter, and model was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. She had a lumpectomy, and then a breast reduction, before embarking on a holistic journey to regain her health. Buell succeeded and is presently showing no signs of cancer seven months after her surgery.
On Monday, she celebrates her resilience, while taking stock of the temporary nature of life, with the release of her new song and video āSkin Suit.ā Buell delivers the gothic rock ballad, which she co-wrote with producer Greg Lattimer and her husband and creative partner, Jim Wallerstein, with gravitas, grace, and good olā fashioned theatricality. While her āskin suitā may be her very flesh and blood, she considers it no more important than the haute couture in her closet.
āThis is just my skin suit/Hanging next to my Manuel,ā she sings, cheekily name-checking the Nashville tailor famous for his rhinestoned creations. In the next line, Buell says she stores her āskin suitā next to āmy Coco Chanel.ā
āThe āskin suitā is the physical body. Itās not our soul. Itās what we use to be on this earth,ā Buell tells Rolling Stone. āI had the title and I had the chorus in my head whirling around. And then after I got my diagnosis, it was almost like something channeled. I put my pen to a piece of paper and it literally just poured out of me exactly as I sing it.ā
Despite its connection to her cancer battle, Buell is reluctant to describe āSkin Suitā as a survivor story. āItās a warrior story, because I am a warrior that is not going to be killed in battle,ā she says. āIām being very Joan of Arc about this.ā
In the video, directed by Alden Allen and Elise Lacret, Buell āĀ in her Manuel pants and jacket āĀ performs the song in front of an unfolding galaxy of stars. Long after she was famously photographed in the Seventies in a Creem T-shirt and little else, she embraces her decades. āIām trying to age gracefully and show people that you can be very alive and very on the road to healing at all ages. And music is healing,ā she says.
Buell, whoās lived in Nashville since 2013, continues to perform live. Back in 2018, she joined Steven Tyler onstage for āTrain Kept A-Rollināā during the Aerosmith frontmanās solo show in Nashville. Buell and Tyler are the parents of the actress Liv Tyler, and Buell says she sent āSkin Suitā to her longtime friend for him to hear. āCatchy as fuck,ā Tyler replied in a lengthy, praiseful text.
Buell will play āSkin Suitā and songs off her other projects on Nov. 8 at Nashville venue the Basement. Das Damen, the Eighties alt-rock band led by Wallerstein, will perform their own set and also back up Buell. āA full-on rock, face-melting set,ā Buell promises. āI just want to show women and people that rocking doesnāt have an age. It has an ability, it has an attitude, it has physicality, and either you either you got it or you donāt, dog.ā

1980 - American model and musician Bebe Buell with her band The B-Sides.
In 1980 Bebe Buell founded her first band, The B-Sides. Together their madeĀ several independent recordings; the first was called āCovers Girlā and wasĀ released by Rhino Records in 1981, produced by RickĀ Derringer and Ric Ocasek. It was a four song EP of obscure cover songs featuring legendary group The Cars backing her on two of the tracks, and rock guitar legend RickĀ Derringer. Bebeās pure love of music and natural sense of cool come through on these recordings.Ā The album cover art was a photo of Bebe ripping up a magazine thatĀ featured her on its cover.
The B-Sides released a pure pop 12 inch picture disc āA Side of the B-Sidesā (1983) produced by Bebeās former beau Todd Rundgren.Ā The band toured extensively in the US and disbanded in 1985.
