Ranking The Beatles' character designs in Yellow Submarine!!!!!!
gonna go from worst to best, it's all in the mind anyways

4. George Harrison
oh my god don't piss me off. imagine being animated into the most colorful, psychedelic movie ever made and they put your character in the most hideous neutral colors and then fucked up your hair I think I'd just end it. I feel like they just didn't really know what to do with George because compared to the other Beatles, hes just very plain. Brown jacket, black pants and a hint of green, he doesn't stand out at all in the film and it's just very boring for someone who IRL wore a lot of color!!! I wish they would have tried to reference some of his more "eastern" (for lack of a better word) clothes and the way that his spirituality and time and india had influenced his fashion at that time. It seems like they tried to focus the detail on his hair because they did this thing where his hair is very uniquely shaped as it's on one side of his head. I would imagine to try and capture George's long hair at the time but it always looks so awkward because it's like, too stiff. I think they got his facial features okay because his nose and eyebrows look good his nose but no cheekbones!!!!!!! plays into the interpretation of George as quiet, nature loving and calm which...is not really accurate and it's kind of frustrating because I don't think it represents him super well. i will be nice tho and say his dialogue is probably my favorite in the film!!!
like what is this hairrrr it's literally going out straight to the right and even when they're disguised as sgt peppers lonely hearts club band he gets the most boring outfit I'm irritated don't do my goat like that
3. Ringo Starr
this is where this gets extremely hard because it's a hard tie between third and second for this but ultimately it came down to the outfits. I love the details of Ringo's design more than the overall design tbh. The decision to make his eyes look more puppy-ish and sad with the dark black outline was ingenious and I think out of their original outfits his is my favorite. It's a very good artistic interpretation of what Ringo Starr as a Beatles and a character would look like but I think it's very based in character. I also really appreciate this movie for not just giving Ringo a massive nose as his only notable facial feature, like genuinely I hate so much when he's just depicted as a sad idiot with a massive nose and no other identifiers but they focused more on his eyes and hair!!! RINGO HAS A PERSONALITY THAT'S NOT NOSE!!!!!! I know he said that his nose wasn't long enough here but idc it makes me sad when people just hyper focus on his nose and make it a caricature like damn he's a real person. Very good Ringo!!!! I like his outfits a lot and I think they're really well coordinated which I can't say for a lot of the others, his striped jacket is really good looking and I think it looks so good when paired with the background animation of the film. Unfortunately his Sgt Peppers outfit is not as good and I think it kinda fades into the background, its mostly a black jacket which is hard to be more interesting or visually appealing. Overall good, outfits put him at three!
all of them have scary hands.
2. John Lennon
John looked incredible in 1966-67, John Lennon was iconic for his appearance then and that's because it might be the best he ever looked (I would argue between this period and the 1977 trip to Japan) and John appearance had never really been animated or drawn well before this so it was risky but THEY PULLED IT OFF. I think my only complaint is hair color because he's depicted with black hair when I think having his more natural light brown would have looked so good!! I feel that way for George as well but also I think that it might have been to help them stand out against the very colourful backgrounds which I get. But his nose is great and I love his moustache!!!! I don't think it looks exactly like him, but it's a very good artistic depiction of his image at the time. I think the reason he's number two is because I do think that they relied more on clothing, glasses and hair for him to make him "John" rather than facial features. His outfits are so good and memorable like,,, they're very psychedelic and weird, the purple pants look insane against the green and pink but it works so well here and I feel like it immediately draws the eye to him. His Sgt. Pepper uniform is my favorite as well, it's really well animated.
I think yoko should have been in the movie just to make people mad.
1. Paul McCartney
guys this is how you design a character based off a real person this IS 1966 Paul. Paul's character design is so impressive to me because it's not really his hair or clothes, it's specifically the facial features and the way his face is drawn with lines that really curve together and draw the viewer's eyes to his expressions and emotions!!!!!!!! his eyes and nose specifically look so much like Paul's (they got his girly lashes down) and he emotes very beautifully. One of my favorite scenes is when they're trying to break the real sgt peppers band out of the bubble and John starts yapping about Einstein and Paul just closes his eyes, starts singing about Einstein (any old, any old, any any any old Einstein...) and spins off majestically to try and get the band out. It's just so well done. He has straighter more "fancy" posture than the others which sets him apart, his hair is really simple but it works really well and looks very good with his busier design. His outfits are the best across both outfits we see the band in, I really love the colored tie and the depiction of Paul as equally whimsical, fun loving and cool as the result but a little more posh and stuck up, I think it accurately matched what a lot of people saw him as in relation to the others at the time. He's still the cute beatle, he's still the most presentable and I think that's visually communicated so well through his outfit and posture. love love love love love love love.
he's just a fairytale prince guys
